Dom Under & Cathedral Square

A UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece of De Stijl architecture. Built in 1924 by Gerrit Rietveld, this house is a radical experiment in open-plan living with movable walls, primary colors, and geometric forms. Guided tours are required.
Book in advance: Tours are limited to 12 people and fill up weeks ahead. 18 EUR. It's a 15-minute walk from the museum.

Bitterballen at De Rat

Take a 1-hour canal boat tour through Utrecht's unique two-level canals. Unlike Amsterdam, Utrecht's canals have wharf cellars (werfkelders) at water level — historic warehouses now converted into restaurants and bars. Rederij de Tulp offers excellent guided tours.
Alternative: Rent a kayak from Kano Utrecht for a more active canal experience. 15 EUR per hour.

Museum Speelklok
One of the most joyful museums in Europe. Museum Speelklok houses an incredible collection of self-playing musical instruments: barrel organs, music boxes, player pianos, and orchestrions. The guided tour includes live demonstrations of these magnificent machines.
Family favorite: Kids love this museum. The guided tour is included in the 16 EUR entry fee.

Coffee at Koffie Leute
Visit Koffie Leute, Utrecht's best specialty coffee shop on the Oudegracht. Their single-origin pour-overs and their cappuccino with oat milk are exceptional. The canal-side seating is perfect for people-watching. A flat white costs 3.50 EUR.

Castle De Haar Day Trip

Fairytale castle in the countryside

Take a 30-minute bus ride from Utrecht Centraal to Kasteel de Haar, the largest castle in the Netherlands. This fairytale castle was rebuilt in 1892 by the Rothschild family and features stunning neo-Gothic architecture, lavish interiors, and a beautiful park with gardens.
Getting there: Bus 111 from Utrecht Centraal. Entry is 19 EUR. The castle+gardens combo is 22 EUR.

Explore the extensive castle gardens, designed by the famous French landscape architect Henri Duchesne. The formal gardens, rose garden, and the English landscape park are magnificent. The castle also has a working farm with animals.

Bike Ride Through Utrecht
Rent a bike for one last ride through the city. Cycle along the canals, through the parks, and explore the quieter neighborhoods like the Museum Quarter and the Wijk C area. Drop the bike off and head to the station.
Last stop: Grab a coffee at Koffie Leute one more time before catching your train. Utrecht Centraal has direct trains to Schiphol Airport (30 minutes).

Utrecht Centraal is a 30-minute train ride from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Direct trains run every 10 minutes. The city center is a 10-minute walk from the station.

Transportation

Utrecht is incredibly walkable. Rent a bike for longer distances. Public transport uses the OV-chipkaart. Trams and buses cover the suburbs. The city center is largely car-free.

Best Time to Visit

April to September offers the best weather. April-May has tulips in bloom. Summer is lively with festivals. December has charming Christmas markets. Winter is quieter but cozy.

Budget Tips
