Where ancient volcanoes meet steaming hot springs, and a 600-year-old town tells the story of Yunnan's borderlands.
Hi, I'm Zhang Ling. I grew up in Tengchong and have been guiding travelers through the volcanic landscapes and ancient towns of my hometown for 12 years. This guide was last updated in July 2026.
Climate Note: Tengchong has a mild climate year-round due to its elevation (1,640m). The dry season (October-May) is the best time to visit. Summer (June-September) is the rainy season with frequent afternoon showers. Tengchong is known as the "hometown of hot springs" in China - there are over 80 hot spring sites in the region. The volcanic soil makes the area incredibly fertile, producing excellent tea, rice, and medicinal herbs.

Fly to Tengchong Tuofeng Airport (TCZ) from Kunming (1 hour), Chengdu, Xi'an, or Guangzhou. Alternatively, take an overnight bus from Kunming (8 hours, 200 RMB). The road journey is scenic but winding.
Taxis are available in Tengchong city (10-20 RMB). For attractions outside the city, hire a driver for the day (250-350 RMB). Public buses connect Tengchong to Heshun and Rehai. Your hotel can arrange drivers.
October-May is the dry season with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. June-September is the rainy season. The best months are March-April (spring flowers) and October-November (autumn colors and mushrooms).
Shower before entering pools. Wear swimsuits. The sulfur smell at Rehai is strong but harmless. Limit soak time to 15-20 minutes. Drink water. Avoid hot springs if you have heart conditions or are pregnant.
Comfortable hiking shoes, swimsuit for hot springs, light jacket (evenings can be cool at 1,640m), rain gear, sun protection, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle.
Tengchong is safe. The elevation (1,640m) is manageable for most people. Food is generally safe - the volcanic soil produces clean, high-quality produce. Tap water is not drinkable - buy bottled water.

Heshun Ancient Town is the most charming village I have visited in China. The volcanic stone houses give it a unique character, and the canals lined with willows are incredibly picturesque. The library is a gem - I spent an hour reading in the peaceful courtyard. The local restaurant Mama's Kitchen made the best mushroom hotpot I have ever eaten. Tengchong is a hidden gem that deserves to be better known.

The Rehai Hot Springs were incredible. The Big Boiling Pot is a natural wonder - seeing that massive pool of boiling water was mesmerizing. Steaming eggs in the volcanic vents was a fun experience and the eggs had a unique creamy texture. The hot spring pools were relaxing and the mineral water left my skin feeling silky smooth. The sulfur smell is strong but you get used to it. A must-do in Tengchong.

The hike up Dayingshan volcano was the highlight of my trip. Standing on the rim of a 200m-wide crater was surreal. The views of the surrounding volcanic landscape were spectacular. We took the hot air balloon ride (weather was perfect) and seeing the crater from above was worth every yuan. The Beihai Wetland boat ride was a lovely contrast - floating through the grass channels was peaceful and the birdlife was abundant.

The Gaoligong Mountain hike was a highlight. The cloud forest is like something out of a fantasy novel - ancient trees dripping with moss, ferns as tall as a person, and the sound of birds everywhere. I am a keen birder and spotted 34 species in one morning, including the beautiful silver pheasant. The park is well-maintained and the trails are clearly marked. The air at that elevation is incredibly fresh and clean.

The Yunnan-Tibet War Memorial was a deeply moving experience. The museum is well-curated and tells the story of the Burma Road and the Flying Tigers with clarity and respect. Our guide's grandfather worked on the Burma Road as a laborer, and his personal stories added a powerful human dimension. The Flying Tigers exhibit brought tears to my eyes. This is an essential part of any Tengchong visit.

The tea plantation visit was a wonderful experience. The family who runs it has been growing tea for four generations. The dian hong black tea was the best I have ever tasted - smooth, rich, with notes of honey and chocolate. I bought 500g for 120 RMB, which would cost ten times that at home. The volcanic soil really does produce exceptional tea. The terrace views of the mountains were stunning.

Tengchong is the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday. The hot springs are world-class, the hiking is accessible and rewarding, and Heshun is a dream to wander through. The Shouguo Temple offered a moment of peace and the views from the pagoda were beautiful. The local food is incredible - the wild mushrooms in autumn are a must. I left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Highly recommended for anyone who needs a break from the city.

The Die Waterfall was a pleasant surprise - powerful and beautiful, surrounded by lush vegetation. The volcano park is unlike anything I have seen in China. The hot air balloon over Dayingshan was a splurge but absolutely worth it. The Heshun morning market was a feast for the senses - the local cheese (ru shan) is delicious and the pickled vegetables are addictive. Tengchong is a special place that deserves more international attention.
