Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Tour
Begin your Abu Dhabi journey at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world. The white marble structure features 82 domes and crystal chandeliers. The main hall holds the world's largest hand-knotted carpet.
Dress code: Women must wear an abaya, provided free at the entrance. Men must wear long trousers. The mosque supplies everything needed for modest dress.
Afternoon
Reflecting Pools & Photography
Walk the marble courtyards surrounded by reflective pools that mirror the mosque's perfection. The floral designs inlaid into the marble walls use semi-precious stones.
Best light: Visit late afternoon when the white marble glows golden. Sunset photos from the exterior are breathtaking.
Evening
Mosque at Night
Return after dark when the mosque is illuminated in shades of blue and white. The lighting system reflects the phases of the moon. The atmosphere is serene and otherworldly after sunset.

Louvre Abu Dhabi
Explore Jean Nouvel's floating dome museum with its "rain of light" effect. Inside are 12 galleries with 600+ artworks.
Must-see: The Bactrian Princess, Leonardo da Vinci's La Belle Ferronniere, and the monumental Ai Weiwei fountain. Allow at least 3 hours.
Afternoon
Saadiyat Beach & Cultural District
Relax on Saadiyat Public Beach with its turquoise water and white sand. The beach overlooks the cultural district where the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum are taking shape. Spot dolphins playing offshore if you are lucky.
Beach tip: The water is calm and shallow, perfect for swimming. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available for rent.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
Spend the morning at Ferrari World, home to Formula Rossa, the world's fastest roller coaster at 240 km/h. Also try Flying Aces with the world's tallest loop.
Thrill-seeker tip: Formula Rossa requires safety goggles due to the speed. Remove loose items. Height minimum is 1.4 meters.
Afternoon
Warner Bros World or Yas Waterworld
Choose your afternoon adventure. Warner Bros World is a fully indoor theme park with immersive lands for Batman, Superman, Bugs Bunny, and Scooby-Doo. The air conditioning is a welcome escape from the heat. Yas Waterworld offers 45 rides with a pearl-diving theme.
Combo deal: Yas Island offers multi-park tickets that save money if you plan to visit more than one attraction.
Evening
Yas Marina Dinner
Dine at Yas Marina overlooking the Formula 1 race track. The waterfront promenade has restaurants ranging from casual burgers to upscale Italian. Watch the yachts bobbing in the harbor.

Desert Safari Experience

Dune bashing, camels, and Bedouin camp under the stars

Dune Bashing & Camel Rides
Leave the city behind for the Liwa Desert or Al Khatim. Your driver takes you on a roller-coaster ride over massive dunes. The steep drops are exhilarating. Stop for photos as the sun turns the sand orange.
Motion sickness: If you get carsick, sit in the front seat and tell your driver to go easy. Most drivers are happy to adjust the intensity.
Evening
Bedouin Camp & Falcon Show
Arrive at a Bedouin-style camp. Ride a camel at sunset, get henna, and watch a falconry demonstration. Try sandboarding if you have energy left.
Photography: The golden hour light on the dunes is magical. Bring a scarf to protect your camera from sand.

BBQ Dinner & Stargazing

Etihad Towers Observation Deck
Ride to the 74th-floor observation deck at Etihad Towers. The 360-degree views stretch to the desert horizon and the glass floor lets you look straight down.

Sir Bani Yas Island has giraffes, cheetahs, and oryx on guided safaris, plus ancient monastery ruins from 600 AD.
Day trip: If Sir Bani Yas is too far, visit the Al Ain Zoo or simply enjoy a relaxed morning at your hotel pool.
Afternoon
Marina Mall & Last-Minute Shopping
Browse Marina Mall for last-minute souvenirs. Dates, Arabic perfumes, camel milk chocolate, and Persian carpets are popular buys. The mall has views over the marina and a revolving restaurant on top.
Perfume tip: Try oud-based perfumes at local shops. They are unique to the region and make memorable gifts.

Farewell at Emirates Palace
End your Abu Dhabi week with a final walk through Emirates Palace gardens. The hotel's domes glow golden against the night sky. Reflect on a week that blended ancient Bedouin heritage with some of the most ambitious modern architecture on Earth.

Practical Tips

Getting There

Fly into Zayed International Airport (AUH), one of the busiest airports in the region. It is 30 km from the city center. Taxis and Uber operate freely. The airport opened a stunning new terminal in 2023.

Transportation

Taxis are affordable and metered. Uber and Careem operate widely. The city is very spread out, so public transport is limited compared to European cities. Renting a car is useful for desert trips.

Visa Requirements

Many nationalities receive a free visa on arrival valid for 30-90 days. Check current requirements before travel. The UAE has one of the most open visa policies in the Middle East.

Budget Tips

Hotels range from budget to ultra-luxury. Eating at mall food courts and local cafeterias saves money. Many attractions like the Grand Mosque are free. Book theme park tickets online for discounts.

What to Pack

Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees for public areas. Lightweight breathable fabrics for the heat. A sweater for heavily air-conditioned indoor spaces. Comfortable walking shoes and sunglasses.

Best Time to Visit

November to March offers perfect weather with temperatures around 20-25 degrees Celsius. April and October are still manageable. May through September is brutally hot, often exceeding 45 degrees Celsius with high humidity.

Formula Rossa at Ferrari World is absolutely insane. I have ridden every major coaster in the US and nothing prepares you for launching from 0 to 240 km/h in under 5 seconds. My cheeks were flapping like a dog with its head out a car window. The ride lasts only 90 seconds but the adrenaline stays with you for hours. Flying Aces has the tallest non-inverted loop in the world and I grayed out at the top. Pure coaster heaven.

The desert safari was hands down the best experience of our trip. Our driver Mohammed was a maniac in the dunes, taking us up impossibly steep slopes and sliding sideways down the other side. At the camp we rode camels at sunset, which was way more uncomfortable than it looks in photos but felt so authentic. The BBQ dinner under the stars with a belly dancer and tanoura spinning was magical. I saw more stars than I have ever seen in my life.
