From the sails of the Opera House to the waves of Bondi, experience Australia's most dazzling harbour city.
Hi, I'm Jake. I spent three years living in Surry Hills and still get back to Sydney every chance I get. This guide was last updated in July 2026.

Fly into Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD). The Airport Link train reaches Circular Quay in 13 minutes. Taxis cost around AUD 50-60 to the CBD.
Get an Opal card for buses, trains, and ferries. Ferries are the best way to see the harbour. Tap on and off. Daily fare caps apply.
Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or eVisitor visa. Apply online before departure. Processing is usually instant.
Sydney is pricey. Save money with free walking tours, picnic lunches from Coles or Woolworths, and happy hour drinks. Many museums are free.
Strong SPF 50+ sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, comfortable walking shoes, and a light jacket for evening harbour breezes. Swimwear is essential.
Order a flat white, Australia's signature drink. Try Single O in Surry Hills or Paramount Coffee Project in Darlinghurst for the best roasts in the city.

The BridgeClimb was the highlight of my entire Australia trip. Standing 134 meters above the harbour with the wind in my hair was unreal. Our guide pointed out landmarks and shared stories about the bridge's construction. Worth every penny.

Bondi to Coogee walk blew my mind. We started at 7 AM and had Bronte Beach almost to ourselves. I stopped at Clovelly to snorkel with the blue gropers and ended with a flat white at Coogee Pavilion. My legs were sore but my heart was full. Definitely wear hiking shoes, not flip-flops.

My husband surprised me with dinner at Bennelong for our anniversary and I cried when the sun set behind the harbour bridge. The seared scallops were the best I have ever tasted. Earlier that day, Taronga Zoo stole my heart, especially the koala encounter where I got to pet Wally for a full three minutes.

The Blue Mountains day trip was way better than I expected. The Scenic Railway felt like a roller coaster going down that 52-degree incline. Our guide at Wentworth Falls told us about the oil from the eucalyptus trees that creates that signature blue haze. I finally understood why they call it Blue Mountains.

Doyles fish and chips at Watsons Bay lived up to the hype. I ordered the grilled barramundi and my partner got the famous battered flathead. We ate on the beach watching the ferries come and go. The walk to Hornby Lighthouse after lunch was the perfect digestif. Sydney knows how to do seafood right.
Portland, OR | November 2025
Traveled with my two teenagers and they actually loved the Opera House tour. My daughter is into architecture and she spent twenty minutes photographing the white ceramic tiles that make up those famous sails. The ferry to Manly was their favorite part though. Something about standing on that outdoor deck with the wind blowing made them put down their phones for once.
Chicago, IL | October 2025
The Vivid Sydney light festival was happening during our visit in late May and it transformed the entire harbour into an art installation. The Opera House projections were mesmerizing. My only regret was not booking accommodation earlier because prices doubled. Get an Opal card immediately, the ferries during Vivid are a moving light show themselves.

Single O coffee in Surry Hills ruined American coffee for me forever. That flat white was like drinking velvet. I also hit up the Pyrmont Fish Market at 8 AM to see the tuna auction and ate the freshest sashimi of my life for breakfast. Harry's Cafe de Wheels meat pie at Woolloomooloo at 2 AM after a few beers? Absolute perfection.
