Join the legendary queue at Fergburger on Shotover Street. The "Big Al" burger is massive, but the classic Ferg with bacon is perfection. The wait can hit an hour but trust me, it is worth every minute.
Local hack: Go right when they open at 8 AM for breakfast burgers with zero wait.

Skyline Gondola & Luge Adventures

Panoramic views and gravity-fueled fun

Skyline Gondola to Bob's Peak
Ride the steepest cable car in the Southern Hemisphere up to Bob's Peak. The view from the top encompasses Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, Coronet Peak, and Queenstown nestled below.
Photography tip: Morning light illuminates the lake best. The viewing deck is free once you are up top.
Afternoon
Skyline Luge Rides
Race down the purpose-built luge tracks on a three-wheeled cart. The Advanced Track has banked corners and tunnels. Buy a multi-ride pass because once is never enough. Kids and adults alike love this.
Family fun: Children over 6 can ride solo. Younger kids ride tandem with an adult.
Evening
Sunset Buffet Dinner
Stay for the Stratosfare Restaurant sunset buffet. The seafood and New Zealand lamb are excellent, but the real star is the view as the sun dips behind the mountains and the town lights flicker on below.

Milford Sound Day Trip

Fjords, waterfalls, and wildlife

Scenic Drive to Milford Sound
Depart early for the 4-hour drive along the Milford Road through Fiordland National Park. Pass Mirror Lakes, the Avenue of the Disappearing Mountain, and Homer Tunnel carved through solid granite. The road itself is a highlight.
Fly-cruise-fly: Short on time? Book a flight from Queenstown to Milford, cruise the sound, and fly back. It costs more but saves 8 hours of driving.

Milford Sound Cruise
Board a 2-hour cruise through the 15-kilometer fjord. See the iconic Mitre Peak rising 1,692 meters straight from the water. The boat noses right under Stirling Falls. Keep an eye out for New Zealand fur seals, dolphins, and rare Fiordland penguins.
Why we love it: Even in rain, hundreds of temporary waterfalls cascade down the cliff faces. It is magical.
Evening
Return to Queenstown
Drive back through the Homer Tunnel as the evening light paints the mountains pink. Stop in Te Anau for dinner if you need a break from the road.

Bungy, Jet Boat & Adrenaline Overload

Conquer your fears in the adventure capital

AJ Hackett Kawarau Bridge Bungy
Take the leap from the world's first commercial bungy jumping site. The 43-meter drop toward the turquoise Kawarau River was where it all began in 1988. You can even touch the water if you request a dunk.
Nervous? Watch a few jumps before deciding. The crew is incredibly supportive and the adrenaline rush is unlike anything else. Cost is around NZD 235.
Afternoon
Shotover Jet Canyon Run
Hold on tight as the Shotover Jet powers through the narrow canyon at 95 km/h, spinning 360 degrees within 10 centimeters of the rock walls. The drivers are showmen and the roar of the V8 engines echoes off the canyon.
Pro tip: Sit in the front rows for the most spray and excitement. You will get wet.

After all that adrenaline, unwind with a wine tasting in the Gibbston Valley. Amisfield Winery's bistro serves a legendary trust-the-chef menu paired with their award-winning Pinot Noir.

Glenorchy & Lord of the Rings Country

Scenic drives and Middle-earth landscapes

Morning
Drive to Glenorchy
Drive the 45-minute lakeside road from Queenstown to Glenorchy, regularly voted one of the most scenic drives on Earth. The road hugs Lake Wakatipu with snow-capped mountains reflecting in the crystal water. Stop at Bennett's Bluff for photos.
Photo stop: The pullout at Wilson Bay offers the classic shot of the road curving along the lake edge.

Lord of the Rings Locations
Join a 4WD safari to visit filming locations from the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. See Isengard, Lothlorien, and the Misty Mountains in the Dart River valley. The landscapes are so dramatic they look computer-generated.
Movie buff: Bring stills from the films to match the exact angles where Peter Jackson set up his cameras.

Glenorchy Hotel Dinner
Have a laid-back dinner at the Glenorchy Hotel, a classic Kiwi pub with character. The drive back to Queenstown at dusk is stunning as the mountains turn purple.

Arrowtown, Wanaka & Nevis Swing

Gold rush history and the world's highest swing

Morning
Arrowtown Heritage Walk
Visit the charming gold rush village of Arrowtown, just 20 minutes from Queenstown. Stroll down Buckingham Street with its preserved 19th-century cottages. The Chinese Settlement along the river tells the story of migrant miners. Autumn colors here are spectacular.
Foodie stop: Grab a savory pie from the Arrowtown Bakery. The steak and cheese is legendary among locals.
Afternoon
Wanaka & Puzzling World
Continue to Wanaka, a quieter lakeside town with a relaxed vibe. Visit Puzzling World for optical illusions and the famous leaning tower. Roy's Peak hike offers famous views but takes 5-6 hours return.
Shorter option: The hike to Roy's Peak lookout is tough. Try the Diamond Lake circuit for easier views.
Evening
Nevis Swing
On your way back, stop at the Nevis Swing, the world's highest swing with a 300-meter arc over the Nevis River canyon. Swing solo or tandem, forwards or backwards. The freefall before the arc catches you is pure terror and pure joy.

Sunrise at Lake Wakatipu
Wake early for one last lakeside sunrise. The calm morning water creates perfect mirror reflections of the surrounding peaks. Walk the Queenstown Trail along the lake edge or simply sip coffee at a waterfront cafe.
Coffee spot: Vudu Cafe on Beach Street makes a flat white that rivals anything in Melbourne.

Gibbston Valley Wine Tour
Spend your final afternoon touring the Central Otago wine region. Visit Gibbston Valley Winery for their cave tour and tastings. Their Pinot Noir is world-class. Peregrine Wines has an architecturally stunning tasting room shaped like a falcon's wing.
Wine tip: Central Otago Pinot Noir is the region's signature. Buy a bottle to take home as the ultimate souvenir.

Farewell Dinner at Rata
Celebrate your week at Rata, chef Josh Emett's refined restaurant serving modern New Zealand cuisine. The venison and local seafood are exceptional. Toast your adventures with a Central Otago Pinot as the sun sets over the lake.

Practical Tips

Getting There

Fly into Queenstown Airport (ZQN) from Auckland, Wellington, Sydney, or Melbourne. The airport is just 8 km from town. Shuttle buses cost around NZD 20.

Transportation

A rental car is useful for day trips to Milford Sound and Wanaka, but not essential for central Queenstown. Mountain roads are winding and narrow. Drive carefully in winter conditions.

Visa Requirements

Most visitors need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA). Apply online at least 72 hours before travel. The IVL tourism levy is included.

Budget Tips

Queenstown is expensive. Self-cater at Countdown supermarket. Hostel dorms start at NZD 35. Book adventure activities as combo packages for discounts.

What to Pack

Layered clothing is essential. The weather changes fast in the mountains. Pack a waterproof jacket, sturdy hiking boots, and swimwear for lake dips.

Best Seasons

December to February is summer with long days perfect for hiking. June to August brings ski season at Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. March and April offer crisp autumn colors.
