Window of the World is gloriously kitschy—replicas of the Eiffel Tower, Pyramids, and Taj Mahal all crammed into one theme park. It's ridiculous and I loved it. The evening laser show over the 'international' landmarks is actually impressive. Entry was 220 yuan and we spent a whole day there. My kids thought it was the greatest place on earth.

OCT Loft is exactly what you'd want from a Chinese creative district—converted factory warehouses filled with galleries, indie boutiques, and craft coffee. The weekend creative market had local designers selling handmade leather goods and screen prints. Dameisha Beach was surprisingly clean for being so close to the city; the sand is soft and the boardwalk has decent seafood restaurants.

Ping An Finance Centre's observation deck at 562 meters is the tallest in Shenzhen and the view is dizzying. On clear days you can see Hong Kong across the bay. The elevator ride up takes 55 seconds and your ears definitely feel it. Dafen Oil Painting Village was fascinating—hundreds of artists producing replicas and original works. Commissioned a family portrait for 300 yuan.

Huaqiangbei electronics market is nerd paradise. Multi-story buildings packed with every electronic component, gadget, and accessory imaginable. Bought a custom mechanical keyboard, a drone, and about twenty cables I didn't know I needed. Prices are about 60% of what you'd pay online. You need patience and a willingness to dig through chaos.

Lianhuashan Park is where locals actually go for morning exercise. Thousands of people doing tai chi, dancing, and jogging around the central lake. The hilltop has a massive bronze statue of Deng Xiaoping overlooking the city—very symbolic of Shenzhen's transformation from fishing village to mega-city. The view of the skyline from up there is worth the short climb.

Dim sum in Shenzhen is legitimately better than most places in the US. We went to Lei Garden and the har gow had translucent wrappers you could see the pink shrimp through. The char siu bao were fluffy and sweet. Shenzhen's food scene reflects its migrant population—you'll find authentic Hunan, Sichuan, and Northeastern Chinese food everywhere.

The Shenzhen Bay Park waterfront stretches for miles and is perfect for an evening bike ride. The skyline across the water is all glass towers and LED light shows. Futian CBD feels like a city built five years in the future—everything is new, clean, and hyper-organized. It's almost unnerving how efficient everything is compared to older Chinese cities.

Best Time to Visit
Autumn (September-November) and spring (March-May) are ideal with mild temperatures. Summer is hot and humid, while winter is mild.
Getting Around
Shenzhen has an excellent subway system. Taxis and Didi are readily available. Buses are also an option.
Local Cuisine
Don't miss fresh seafood, dim sum, Hakka cuisine, and local street foods. Shenzhen has a vibrant food scene.
