Fly into Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport (LJU). A shuttle bus to the city center costs 4.10 EUR. Check into your hotel — we recommend the boutique Hotel Cubo or the charming Vander Urbani Resort. The city center is compact and car-free, perfect for walking.
Pro tip: Stay in the Old Town for easy access to everything. The center is pedestrian-only.

Ljubljana Castle & Funicular
Take the funicular railway (6 EUR round trip) up to Ljubljana Castle. Explore the castle grounds, the Virtual Castle museum, the Slovenian History exhibition, and the watchtower with panoramic views of the city and the Alps in the distance.
Best time: Late afternoon for golden hour light on the city. The castle grounds are free; museum entry is 10 EUR.

Dinner at Gostilna Sokol
Dine at Gostilna Sokol, a traditional Slovenian restaurant in the Old Town. Try the jota (bean and sauerkraut stew) and the štruklji (rolled dough dumplings). The wood-paneled interior is charming. Expect to pay 20-30 EUR per person.

Start at Preseren Square, the heart of Ljubljana, with the pink Franciscan Church and the statue of Slovenia's greatest poet. Admire the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) — Plečnik's ingenious solution to connect the Old Town with the modern city. Three bridges side by side, each serving a different purpose.

Plečnik's House & National Library
Visit Plečnik's House (UNESCO), the home and studio of Jože Plečnik, Ljubljana's architectural genius. The house is preserved exactly as he left it. Then visit the National and University Library, his masterpiece — a stunning combination of brick and stone with a dramatic reading room.

Riverside Dinner & Ljubljanica Walk

Dragon Bridge & Old Town
Visit the iconic Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most), built in 1901 and guarded by four magnificent dragon statues — the symbol of Ljubljana. Legend says the dragons wag their tails when a virgin crosses. Wander through the Old Town's cobblestone streets, discovering hidden courtyards and artisan shops.
Fun fact: The bridge is one of the finest examples of Art Nouveau bridge architecture in Europe.

Central Market & Open Kitchen
Explore Ljubljana's Central Market, another Plečnik masterpiece. The covered market is a feast of fresh produce, local cheeses, cured meats, and flowers. On Fridays (March-October), don't miss Odprta Kuhna (Open Kitchen) — a massive open-air food market with over 50 stalls serving dishes from Slovenian and international cuisines.

Metelkova Nightlife
Experience Metelkova, an autonomous art squat and the heart of Ljubljana's alternative nightlife. This former military barracks has been transformed into a vibrant cultural center with galleries, clubs, bars, and incredible street art. Gala Hala is the most popular club. Expect loud music, art installations, and a very local crowd.

Lake Bled Day Trip

Fairytale lake and cream cake

Lake Bled
Take a 1-hour bus from Ljubljana to Lake Bled (7 EUR one way). The lake is a postcard-perfect alpine wonder with a cliff-top castle, a tiny island church, and emerald-green water. Walk around the lake (6 km, takes about 1.5 hours) or rent a traditional pletna boat to row to the island.
Pletna boat: 14 EUR per person round trip to the island. The boatmen have been doing this for centuries.
Afternoon
Bled Castle & Kremna Rezina
Visit Bled Castle, perched on a 130-meter cliff. The castle has a museum, a wine cellar, and a printing press. But the real reason to visit is the view over the lake. Afterward, head to Park Cafe (the original) for kremna rezina — the legendary Bled cream cake. Layers of custard, cream, and flaky pastry.
Best cream cake: Park Cafe, the original. 4.50 EUR per slice. The recipe has been a secret since 1953.
Evening
Return to Ljubljana
Take the bus back to Ljubljana (last bus at 9 PM). For dinner, try the street food at Open Kitchen if it's Friday, or visit the Ribca restaurant for fresh Slovenian seafood. The local wine — Teran and Cvicek — are excellent and very affordable.

Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle

Postojna Cave
Take a bus or tour to Postojna Cave (45 minutes from Ljubljana). This is one of the largest karst cave systems in the world, with 24 km of tunnels. The tour includes a 4 km train ride through the cave (the only underground railway in Europe). See the famous "human fish" (olm) — a blind, cave-dwelling salamander.
Entry: 25.80 EUR for the cave tour. The cave temperature is 10 degrees C — bring a jacket!

Predjama Castle
Just 9 km from Postojna, Predjama Castle is a dramatic 13th-century castle built into a 123-meter cliff face. It's the largest cave castle in the world. The castle was the hideout of the legendary knight Erazem of Predjama. The combination ticket for both sites is 35 EUR.

Evening
Dinner at Špajza
Return to Ljubljana and dine at Špajza, a romantic restaurant in a 16th-century townhouse. The Slovenian tasting menu (35 EUR) includes local specialties like Karst prosciutto, buckwheat polenta, and potica (nut roll). The wine cellar is exceptional.

Tivoli Park & Tivoli Castle
Explore Tivoli Park, Ljubljana's largest green space. Walk through the park to Tivoli Castle (now the International Centre of Graphic Arts), passing the Jakopič Promenade and the beautiful flower gardens. The park is perfect for a morning stroll or jog.
Entry: Free. The park is beautiful year-round, especially in autumn when the leaves change.

National Gallery of Slovenia
Visit the National Gallery, housing Slovenia's most important art collection. The highlight is the Robba Fountain (a copy of the original), and works by Ivan Grohar (The Sower is Slovenia's most famous painting) and Zoran Mušič. The building itself is a stunning neo-Renaissance palace.
Entry: 8 EUR. The Sower by Ivan Grohar is a must-see — it's on the Slovenian 5-cent coin.

Trubarjeva Antiques & Wine
Explore Trubarjeva Street, known for its antique shops and vintage stores. In the evening, join a wine tasting at Dvorni Wine Bar, which offers the best selection of Slovenian wines. Try Teran (a robust red from the Karst region) and Cvicek (a light, refreshing red). Wines by the glass cost 4-7 EUR.

Ljubljanica Kayaking & Departure

One last adventure on the river

Rent a kayak from Ljubljanica River Rentals and paddle through the city center. The river offers a unique perspective of the Triple Bridge, the Butchers' Bridge (with its love locks), and the Dragon Bridge from water level. The current is gentle, making it easy for beginners.
Cost: 15 EUR per hour. A 1.5-hour trip is enough to see the main sights.

Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport (LJU) is 25 km from the city center. Shuttle buses run every 30 minutes (4.10 EUR). Direct flights from London, Paris, Frankfurt, and Istanbul.

Transportation

The city center is car-free and walkable. Rent a bike from BicikeLJ (3 EUR/week). Public buses cover the suburbs. Buy an Urbana card (2 EUR) and load credit for bus rides (1.30 EUR per ride).

Best Time to Visit

April to October offers the best weather. May-June are perfect for outdoor activities. July-August is busy but vibrant. September-October is beautiful with autumn colors. December has charming Christmas markets.

Budget Tips

Ljubljana is affordable by European standards. Budget 60-90 EUR/day for comfortable travel. Open Kitchen on Friday is the best value for food. Local wine is cheaper than beer. The Ljubljana Card offers free public transport and museum entry.
