Europe's greenest jewel — a car-free center, a castle on a hill, and the most charming river you've never heard of.
Hi, I's Mateja. I've called Ljubljana home for 12 years and know every cobblestone, cafe, and castle corner. This guide was last updated in July 2026.

Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport (LJU) is 25 km from the city center. Shuttle buses run every 30 minutes (4.10 EUR). Direct flights from London, Paris, Frankfurt, and Istanbul.
The city center is car-free and walkable. Rent a bike from BicikeLJ (3 EUR/week). Public buses cover the suburbs. Buy an Urbana card (2 EUR) and load credit for bus rides (1.30 EUR per ride).
April to October offers the best weather. May-June are perfect for outdoor activities. July-August is busy but vibrant. September-October is beautiful with autumn colors. December has charming Christmas markets.
Ljubljana is affordable by European standards. Budget 60-90 EUR/day for comfortable travel. Open Kitchen on Friday is the best value for food. Local wine is cheaper than beer. The Ljubljana Card offers free public transport and museum entry.
Comfortable walking shoes (car-free city = lots of walking). A light jacket for the cave (10 degrees C). A swimsuit for Lake Bled. Layers for changeable weather. A reusable water bottle (tap water is excellent).
Slovenians are friendly and reserved. Greet with "Dober dan" (Good day). Tipping is appreciated (10% in restaurants). English is widely spoken by younger people. The pace of life is relaxed.
Lake Bled: bus from Ljubljana (1 hour, 7 EUR). Postojna Cave: direct bus or tour (45 minutes, 8 EUR). Book cave tickets online to avoid queues. Consider the Ljubljana Card for day trip discounts.
Teran (robust red from Karst), Cvicek (light red blend), Rebula (white from Goriška Brda), and Penina (Slovenian sparkling wine). Wine bars like Dvorni Wine Bar and Vinoteka Movia offer excellent tastings.

Ljubljana is absolutely charming. The car-free center makes such a difference — you can actually enjoy walking without dodging traffic. The Dragon Bridge is incredible, especially at sunset when the light hits the green dragons. The funicular up to the castle is quick and easy, and the views from the tower are spectacular. Lake Bled was the highlight of the trip. The cream cake at Park Cafe is worth every calorie.
Dublin, Ireland | May 2026
Postojna Cave was mind-blowing. The underground train ride is surreal — you're zooming through caverns that are millions of years old. The "human fish" (olm) is weird and fascinating. Predjama Castle is absolutely incredible, built right into a cliff face. The bus system from Ljubljana is easy to navigate. Open Kitchen on Friday was a food paradise — I tried so many local dishes.
Madrid, Spain | April 2026
The architecture of Jože Plečnik is the star of this city. The Triple Bridge is genius — three bridges in one, each for a different purpose. The Central Market is a masterpiece of design. The National Library reading room is one of the most beautiful rooms I've ever seen. Metelkova was a fun surprise — the street art is incredible and the nightlife is very alternative. Slovenia is a hidden gem.
Chicago, IL | March 2026
Kayaking on the Ljubljanica River was the best thing I did. Seeing the Dragon Bridge and Triple Bridge from the water is a completely different experience. The current is so gentle that even I (a complete beginner) felt safe. The Central Market is fantastic — I bought local honey, Karst prosciutto, and a bottle of Teran wine for under 30 EUR. Ljubljana is affordable, beautiful, and incredibly friendly.
Melbourne, Australia | February 2026
Tivoli Park in winter is beautiful — the frost on the trees and the peaceful atmosphere. The National Gallery is wonderful, especially seeing The Sower painting in person. The wine bars here are excellent. I did a wine tasting at Dvorni Wine Bar and tried 8 different Slovenian wines. The Teran is my new favorite red. The food scene is incredible — so much more than I expected from a small capital.
Toronto, Canada | January 2026
The castle at night is magical — illuminated against the dark sky. The funicular runs late, so we went up after dinner. The view of the city lights from the castle terrace is breathtaking. Gostilna Sokol was the perfect traditional dinner spot. The štruklji was delicious. Ljubljana is one of the most underrated cities in Europe. The bike rental system is excellent and incredibly cheap.
Osaka, Japan | December 2025
The Christmas market in Ljubljana is one of the best in Europe. The wooden stalls, the mulled wine, the lights along the river — it's magical. The Dragon Bridge looks especially dramatic in the winter fog. I visited Plečnik's House and was moved by his genius. The man designed everything from bridges to marketplaces to the city's layout. What a visionary.

The Butchers' Bridge with all the love locks is so cute! We added our own. The river is the heart of this city — every cafe, every restaurant, every bridge is centered around it. The food at Špajza was incredible — the Slovenian tasting menu paired with local wines was a culinary journey. I came for 4 days and stayed 7. Ljubljana has a way of making you want to slow down and stay.
