Wildlife Note: Langkawi's macaques are bold and will steal food. Keep bags zipped and never feed them. The island is also home to harmless colugos (flying lemurs) and spectacular hornbills. Respect all wildlife from a distance.

Practical Tips
Getting There
Fly direct to Langkawi International Airport (LGK) from Kuala Lumpur (1 hour), Singapore, or Bangkok. Ferries also connect from Penang (2.5 hours) and the mainland (Kuala Perlis, 1 hour).
Transportation
Rent a car (80-120 MYR/day) or scooter (40-60 MYR/day). Grab is not available, and taxis are expensive and require haggling. A car gives you freedom to explore the north and west coasts.
Visa Requirements
Malaysia offers 90-day visa-free entry to most Western nationals. Ensure your passport has 6 months validity. No advance application needed for most visitors.
Budget Tips
Langkawi is affordable by Western standards. Street food meals cost 8-15 MYR. Mid-range restaurants run 40-70 MYR for two. Load up on duty-free alcohol before leaving - spirits are 30-50% cheaper than mainland Malaysia.
What to Pack
Light, breathable clothing, strong sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle. A dry bag is useful for boat tours. Rain is possible even in dry season - bring a light poncho.
Local Etiquette
Malaysia is predominantly Muslim. Dress modestly away from beaches. Remove shoes when entering homes and mosques. The right hand is preferred for eating and giving. Tipping is not expected but appreciated.

The Sky Bridge was absolutely terrifying and totally worth it. Walking on that curved bridge with nothing but glass panels and 700 meters of empty air below your feet - my legs were shaking. But the view of the Andaman Sea and Thailand in the distance is unreal. Go at 9:30am sharp or you'll be stuck in tour group hell. The cable car itself is worth the ticket price alone.

Kilim mangrove tour was the highlight of our entire Southeast Asia trip. We booked a private boat for 250 MYR and had the most knowledgeable guide. Watching dozens of eagles swoop down to grab chicken skin from the water gave me chills. The bat cave was creepy but fascinating, and the floating fish farm lunch was actually delicious. Tip: bring sunscreen and a hat - there's zero shade on the boat.

Island hopping was way better than expected. Pulau Dayang Bunting's freshwater lake is this bizarre oasis in the middle of the sea - you jump off the boat, hike 10 minutes through jungle, and suddenly you're swimming in fresh water surrounded by limestone walls. The macaques on Beras Basah are adorable but aggressive. A monkey literally tried to unzip my wife's bag. Hold your stuff tight!

Tanjung Rhu Beach is where you need to go if Pantai Cenang feels too busy. We drove up there on day three and ended up spending half a day just walking the shoreline. The casuarina trees create these perfect shaded spots, and at low tide the sandbar lets you walk almost to the little offshore islands. We saw maybe 10 other people the entire time. Pure magic.

Mangrove kayaking with Dev's Adventure Tours was incredible. Paddling silently through narrow mangrove tunnels, we got within meters of a monitor lizard. Our guide knew every bird call. So much more intimate than motorboat tours.

Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls was a hidden gem. The upper pools require a real scramble but we were rewarded with private swimming holes and a natural rock slide. Wear proper shoes - flip-flops won't cut it.
