The Stone Forest at Shilin blew my mind—those limestone pillars look like something from another planet. Our guide took us to a less crowded section where we basically had the place to ourselves. Dian Lake at sunset is unreal. We took the cable car up Western Hills to Dragon Gate and the panoramic view of the city was worth every step. Green Lake Park was perfect for people-watching—old men playing mahjong, couples dancing, families feeding red-billed gulls. Kunming really does feel like spring all year.

The Dongchuan Red Land day trip was the highlight of my whole China trip. The terraced fields looked like someone had spilled paint across the mountains. Be warned—the drive is about 3 hours each way and the roads are rough, but our driver knew every scenic overlook. Bring a wide-angle lens.

Yunnan Provincial Museum doesn't get enough love. The Dian Kingdom bronze artifacts are absolutely stunning, and it's free admission. The Flower and Bird Market was chaotic in the best way—I bought a hand-carved jade pendant for 60 yuan after some friendly bargaining. Wear comfortable shoes, the market covers blocks.

Kunming is known as the Spring City because it has mild weather year-round! Any time is a great time to visit, but spring and autumn are especially beautiful.
Getting Around
Kunming has a good subway system. Taxis and Didi are readily available. Buses are also an option. For day trips, consider hiring a driver or joining a tour.
