Lingyin Temple is massive and ancient. The rock carvings in the Feilai Feng grottoes predate the temple by centuries. The Hall of Five Hundred Arhats with its 500 life-size statues is overwhelming and slightly creepy.

Xixi Wetland is a huge nature reserve inside the city. Boat rides through reeds and lotus ponds, ancient villages, bird watching. It was the calmest place I found in all of China.

Leifeng Pagoda at sunset has the best West Lake view. The original collapsed in 1924, but the reconstruction has an elevator and escalator inside. Touristy but the panorama from the top is unbeatable.

Songcheng theme park is cheesy but the live shows are genuinely impressive. The Song Dynasty eternal love show has 300 performers, real horses, and a stage that floods with water. It is like a Chinese Cirque du Soleil.

Practical Information
Best Time to Visit
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are ideal with mild temperatures. The cherry blossoms in spring and autumn colors are amazing!
Getting Around
Hangzhou has a good subway system. Taxis and Didi are readily available. Bikes are a great way to explore West Lake!
Local Cuisine
Don't miss Dongpo pork, West Lake fish, Longjing shrimp, and Hangzhou-style noodles. The food here is delicious and fresh!
Cultural Tips
Learn basic Mandarin phrases. Be respectful of temples and cultural sites. Bargaining is common in markets but not in fixed-price stores.
