What Travelers Say

Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is the most beautiful boat ride on earth. Karst mountains rising from misty water, water buffalo on the banks, fishermen with cormorants. The 4-hour cruise felt like 20 minutes.

Reed Flute Cave is a tourist trap but genuinely stunning. The limestone formations are lit up in rainbow colors that would be tacky anywhere else but somehow work underground. The Crystal Palace of the Dragon King is the highlight.

Elephant Trunk Hill is exactly what it sounds like. A hill shaped like an elephant drinking from the Li River. It is the symbol of Guilin and the view from the park at sunset is worth the 55 yuan entry.

Longji Rice Terraces are a three-hour drive but mind-blowing. The Dragon's Backbone terraces cascade down mountainsides like green staircases to heaven. Stayed overnight in a Zhuang minority village guesthouse.

Cormorant fishing at night on the Li River is a dying art. The fishermen use trained birds to catch fish by lantern light. It is mostly for show now but still magical to watch. Tipped ours 50 yuan.

West Street in Yangshuo is backpacker central but in a good way. Bars, cafes, souvenir shops, and every third person is a rock climber. Had beer fish, a local specialty, at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the river.

Guilin rice noodles for breakfast at a hole-in-the-wall shop changed my mornings forever. Fresh rice noodles in bone broth with pickled beans, chili oil, and crispy pork. Cost 8 yuan. I ate it every day for a week.

Biking through Yangshuo countryside was the most peaceful day of my China trip. Rice paddies, karst peaks, water buffalo, farmers waving hello. Rented bikes for 30 yuan a day and got happily lost on dirt roads.
