Physical Difficulty Warning: The Enshi Grand Canyon hike is strenuous - 4-5 hours of continuous stair climbing (over 10,000 steps). Wear proper hiking shoes, bring at least 1.5L of water per person, and prepare for steep ascents and descents. The canyon is less crowded than Zhangjiajie but equally demanding. Most Chinese visitors take the cable car and elevator - we recommend hiking the full trail for the best experience.

Arrival in Enshi & Tujia Daughter's City

First taste of Tujia culture and mountain air

Morning
Arrival at Enshi Xujiaping Airport
Fly into Enshi Xujiaping Airport (ENH) - direct flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Xi'an. The airport is just 15 minutes from the city center. Enshi sits at an elevation of 420m, surrounded by karst mountains. The climate is mild and humid. Check into your hotel near the city center - the Jinshan International Hotel or the Enshi International Hotel offer comfortable rooms from 250-400 RMB per night.
Getting around: Taxis start at 7 RMB. Public buses run to most attractions. For outlying sites, hire a driver for the day (300-400 RMB). Most drivers speak only Chinese - have your destination written in Chinese characters.
Afternoon
Tujia Daughter's City
Visit Tujia Daughter's City (Tujia Nuer Cheng), a cultural theme park dedicated to Tujia minority traditions. While it feels touristy, it offers an excellent introduction to Tujia culture. Watch the traditional "bowing dance" (baishouwu), see demonstrations of Tujia embroidery, and explore the recreated Tujia stilt houses. The architecture is distinctive - wooden houses built on stilts with carved railings and curved roofs. Entry is 80 RMB.
Cultural note: The Tujia are known for their marriage customs, including the "crying wedding" where brides cry for a month before their wedding. The embroidery patterns often feature phoenixes and butterflies, symbols of good fortune.

Tujia Welcome Dinner
Enjoy a Tujia welcome dinner at Zhang Guan Zheng, a restaurant near the Daughter's City. Try the signature dishes: lucky tofu (fudoufu, a fermented tofu dish), sour meat (suanrou, pork fermented with rice), and zhangcha duck (tea-smoked duck). The flavors are bold - sour, spicy, and smoky. A meal costs 60-80 RMB per person. The restaurant also has Tujia music performances in the evening.

Enshi Grand Canyon - The Main Event

One of China's most spectacular canyon hikes

Morning
Qixingzhai (Seven Star Village) Section
Depart early (7 AM) for the Enshi Grand Canyon, 40 minutes from the city. Start with the Qixingzhai section, the main scenic area. The hike begins with the Cloud Dragon Plank Walk (Yidifei), a cliff-side path built into the vertical rock face with glass floor sections. The views are dizzying - sheer drops of 300-400m into the valley below. The trail continues through gaps between massive stone pillars, past waterfalls, and across a 300m-long glass bridge suspended over the canyon. The total hike is 4-5 hours with 10,000+ steps.
Route strategy: Start at the entrance and hike DOWN into the canyon first, then take the sightseeing elevator up (30 RMB) or continue hiking. The stairs are relentless - bring trekking poles if you have them. The glass bridge is optional (80 RMB extra) but worth it for the adrenaline.
Afternoon
Rongmei Village & Canyon Views
Continue to Rongmei Village, a Tujia village inside the canyon complex. The village has traditional Tujia houses, a small museum, and excellent views of the surrounding peaks. Eat a simple lunch of Tujia bacon and rice at one of the village restaurants (30-40 RMB). The afternoon light is perfect for photographing the canyon walls, which change color from gray to golden as the sun moves.
Physical prep: This is the most strenuous day of the trip. Start hydrating the day before. Eat a good breakfast. Take breaks every 30 minutes. The canyon has rest stations with water and snacks at regular intervals.
Evening
Recovery Dinner
After the exhausting hike, treat yourself to a hotpot dinner at Hai Di Lao in Enshi city center. The broth is warming and restorative. Order the mushroom broth with plenty of vegetables and sliced meats. A hotpot meal costs 80-120 RMB per person. Soak your feet in hot water when you return to the hotel - your legs will thank you.

Qingjiang River Gallery

Emerald waters and limestone peaks

Qingjiang River Cruise
Take a 45-minute drive to the Qingjiang River Gallery, where the emerald-green river winds through a landscape of limestone karst peaks. Board a sightseeing boat for a 2-hour cruise along the most scenic section of the river. The water is so clear you can see the riverbed 15m below. The karst formations rise dramatically from the water, covered in lush vegetation. The cruise passes through several gorges, each with its own character. The boat ticket is 120 RMB.
Best seats: Sit on the upper deck for the best views and photography. The morning light (9-11 AM) creates the best reflections on the water. Bring a polarizing filter for your camera to cut through the glare.
Afternoon
Suobuya Stone Forest
After the cruise, visit the nearby Suobuya Stone Forest, a lesser-known karst landscape of limestone pillars that resemble a petrified forest. The rock formations are weathered into fantastic shapes - some resembling animals, others like ancient ruins. The stone forest is much smaller than the famous Shilin in Yunnan but far less crowded. A 1.5-hour walk through the formations is sufficient. Entry is 80 RMB.
Photography: The stone forest is best photographed in the late afternoon when the low sun casts long shadows and highlights the texture of the limestone. The pathways are well-maintained but can be slippery after rain.

Qingjiang River Fish Dinner
Dine at a restaurant along the Qingjiang River serving fresh river fish. The signature dish is Qingjiang yu (Qingjiang fish), a local freshwater fish steamed with ginger, scallions, and chili. The flesh is delicate and sweet. Other local specialties include stir-fried river snails and bamboo shoots with cured pork. A fish dinner costs 70-100 RMB per person. The riverside restaurants offer a lovely ambiance with the sound of the river.

Tenglong Cave - Underground River Adventure

Exploring one of Asia's largest cave systems

Tenglong Cave Exploration
Drive 40 minutes to Tenglong Cave (Soaring Dragon Cave), one of the largest cave systems in Asia at over 5km in length. The cave entrance is a massive opening in a limestone cliff face. Inside, the main chamber is 100m high and 200m wide - the scale is cathedral-like. Walk through well-lit pathways past enormous stalactites, stalagmites, and underground pools. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 18C year-round. Entry is 100 RMB.
What to wear: The cave is cool and damp. Bring a light jacket and wear non-slip shoes. The pathways can be wet. The cave lighting is dramatic - a tripod is useful for photography but may not be allowed in all sections.
Afternoon
Underground River Boat Ride
The highlight of Tenglong Cave is the underground river boat ride. Board a small boat and float through a 1km section of the cave on a crystal-clear underground river. The water is so transparent that the boat appears to float on air. The ceiling of the cave is lined with thousands of tiny stalactites that reflect in the water. The boatman navigates the narrow passages using only a light on his head. The boat ride costs 50 RMB extra and lasts 20 minutes.
Don't miss: The "Dragon's Back" formation - a ridge of calcite that runs along the cave ceiling like a dragon's spine. The cave is named after this formation.
Evening
Tujia Bacon & Local Wine
Return to Enshi for dinner at Nongjia Le (Farmers' Joy), a restaurant specializing in Tujia home cooking. The Tujia bacon (larou) is cured and smoked over pine wood, giving it an intense flavor. Try it stir-fried with garlic shoots. Also order the wild bamboo shoots with preserved vegetable. The local rice wine (mijiu) is sweet and low-alcohol - a perfect accompaniment. Dinner costs 50-70 RMB per person.

Tusi Ancient City & Lichuan Tea Terraces

Tusi history and the "Great Wall of Leaves"

Tusi Ancient City
Visit the Tusi Ancient City, a reconstruction of the seat of the Tusi (local chieftains) who ruled this region for centuries. The original city dates back 400 years. The complex includes a 400-year-old city wall, a yamen (government office), and Tusi residential buildings. The Tusi system was a form of indirect rule where local ethnic minority leaders governed on behalf of the Chinese emperor. The site provides excellent context for understanding Tujia history. Entry is 80 RMB.
Historical context: The Tusi system lasted from the Yuan Dynasty (13th century) until the Qing Dynasty (18th century). The Tusi were both military leaders and cultural patrons, promoting Tujia arts and architecture.
Afternoon
Lichuan - The Great Wall of Leaves
Drive 1.5 hours to Lichuan, home to the "Great Wall of Leaves" - a spectacular terraced tea garden that stretches across the hillsides like a green wall. The tea terraces follow the contours of the mountains, creating mesmerizing patterns. Visit a local tea farm to taste Enshi's famous green tea. The high-altitude tea has a delicate, slightly sweet flavor. Walk through the terraces and take photos of the endless green waves. The best viewpoint is from the observation deck at the top of the hill.
Tea buying: Buy fresh Enshi green tea directly from the farmers. A 250g bag costs 30-60 RMB. The spring harvest (March-April) produces the highest quality tea. Store it in a cool, dry place.
Evening
Lichuan Dinner
Have dinner in Lichuan town before returning to Enshi. Try the local specialty - tufu nao (tofu pudding) served with a spicy sauce, and stir-fried wild mountain vegetables. The Tujia people use a unique cooking method called "kong" where food is steamed in a bamboo basket over a pot of boiling water. A local dinner costs 40-60 RMB per person.

Rest Day & Tujia Cultural Immersion

A lighter day to absorb the culture

Morning
Tujia Embroidery Workshop
Join a Tujia embroidery workshop in the Old City area. Tujia embroidery is known for its vivid colors and intricate patterns, often depicting phoenixes, butterflies, and flowers. A local master will teach you basic stitches and you can create a small embroidered bookmark or pouch to take home. The workshop costs 80 RMB and lasts 2 hours. No artistic experience is needed - the patterns are traced onto the fabric for you.
Skill level: The embroidery is easier than it looks. The Tujia "cross-stitch" technique is simple to learn. The finished piece makes a wonderful handmade souvenir.
Afternoon
Enshi Museum & Phoenix Mountain
Visit the Enshi Museum, which has excellent exhibits on Tujia history, traditional costumes, and the region's natural history. The museum is free and takes about 1.5 hours to explore. Afterwards, take a gentle walk up Phoenix Mountain (Fenghuang Shan), a hill in the city center with a pagoda at the top. The views of Enshi city and the surrounding mountains are lovely. The walk takes 30 minutes to the summit.
Free activity: The museum is an underrated gem. The Tujia costume display is particularly beautiful, with headdresses made of silver coins and intricate embroidery.
Evening
Enshi Night Market
Explore the Enshi Night Market near the city center. The market comes alive after 7 PM with food stalls, street vendors, and locals socializing. Try the street food specialties: jianbing (Chinese crepes, 8 RMB), spicy tofu skewers (10 RMB for 5), and grilled fish wrapped in banana leaves (25 RMB). The atmosphere is lively and welcoming. It is a great place to practice your Chinese and chat with locals.

Last tastes of Enshi

Enshi Breakfast & Souvenir Shopping
Start your final day with an Enshi-style breakfast. Visit a local breakfast shop for regan mian (hot dry noodles, 6 RMB), a Hubei specialty, and a bowl of tofu pudding (3 RMB). The noodles are tossed in a sesame sauce with chili oil and scallions - simple and satisfying. For last-minute souvenirs, buy Enshi green tea, Tujia embroidery pieces, and dried wild mushrooms from the local market.
Breakfast tip: Regan mian is the breakfast of choice in Hubei. The best shops have long queues in the morning. Look for a busy shop and join the line.
Afternoon
Final Tujia Meal
One last Tujia meal at Tujia Fengwei Restaurant near the train station. Order the Tujia combination platter, which includes samples of bacon, sour meat, tofu, and pickled vegetables. The meal is a perfect summary of the bold, earthy flavors of Tujia cuisine. A final lunch costs 40-60 RMB per person.

Departure
Transfer to Enshi Airport or Enshi Railway Station for your departure. The train to Yichang (2.5 hours) connects to high-speed trains to Wuhan, Beijing, and Shanghai. Taxi to the airport is 20 RMB, to the train station is 15 RMB. Allow plenty of time for security checks.

Practical Tips

Getting There

Fly to Enshi Xujiaping Airport (ENH) from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xi'an, or Chengdu. Alternatively, take a high-speed train to Enshi Station from Wuhan (4 hours), Yichang (2 hours), or Chongqing (3 hours).

Transportation

In Enshi city, use taxis (7 RMB start) or Didi (Chinese Uber). For the Grand Canyon and other attractions, hire a private driver for the day (300-400 RMB). Public buses serve the Grand Canyon and Tenglong Cave.

Visa Requirements

Most foreign travelers need a Chinese visa. Enshi is open to foreign tourists without additional permits. Ensure your visa allows travel within Hubei province.

Hiking Gear

Proper hiking shoes are essential for the Grand Canyon. Bring trekking poles, at least 1.5L of water per person, snacks, sun protection, and a rain jacket. The canyon can be hot and humid in summer.

Language

English is not widely spoken in Enshi. Download a translation app (Pleco or Baidu Translate) and have key phrases saved in Chinese. Most attraction signs have English translations, but menus and bus signs do not.

Best Time to Visit

April-May and September-October offer the best weather - mild temperatures, clear skies, and lower humidity. Summer (June-August) is hot and rainy. Winter (December-February) is cold and some attractions may close.
