Red Fort Jama Masjid Taj Mahal Day Trip Chandni Chowk Qutub Minar

Safety & Street Food Note: Delhi is overwhelming at first - use the Metro (clean, air-conditioned, with a women's car), ride the women's car for safety, and stick to busy stalls at mealtimes. Drink only sealed bottled water, eat where crowds are thick, and carry hand sanitizer. A rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk costs about 200 rupees.

Daily Journey Inspiration

1

Old Delhi: Red Fort & Jama Masjid

Mughal heart of the city

Morning
Red Fort (Lal Qila)
Enter the Red Fort through the Lahore Gate, a UNESCO site built by Shah Jahan in 1648. Walk the Chatta Chowk covered bazaar, the Diwan-i-Am public hall, and the pearl-white Rang Mahal.
Book ahead: Entry is 600 rupees for foreigners (40 for Indians). Buy the ASI combo ticket covering Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, and more for 1,100 rupees - it saves money.
Afternoon
Jama Masjid
Walk to Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, holding 25,000 worshippers. Climb the 121-step south minaret (300 rupees) for a sweeping view of Old Delhi's rooftops. Dress modestly - robes are provided free at the gate.
Respectful visit: Entry is free before prayer times; the 300-rupee fee is only for the minaret camera fee. Avoid visiting during Friday noon prayers.
Evening
Dinner at Karim's
Eat at Karim's, the legendary Mughlai restaurant near Jama Masjid since 1913. Order mutton burra kebab, nihari with khameeri roti, and chicken Jahangiri. A feast for two runs about 800 rupees.
Local secret: The "Karim's 2" upstairs is quieter and air-conditioned - same menu, less chaos. Cash and UPI both accepted now.
2

Chandni Chowk & Paranthe Wali Gali

Bazaar chaos and stuffed flatbreads

Morning
Cycle Rickshaw through Chandni Chowk
Hire a cycle rickshaw (about 200 rupees for an hour) through Chandni Chowk, the 17th-century bazaar. Weave past spice shops at Khari Baoli, silver lanes at Dariba Kalan, and wedding sari shops. The chaos is the attraction.
Safety tip: Agree the price and duration before you start. Keep phones tucked away - the lanes are tight and crowded.
Afternoon
Paranthe Wali Gali
Walk to Paranthe Wali Gali, the legendary stuffed-flatbread street. Try the banana paratha and papad paratha at Pandit Gaya Prasad Shiv Charan (since 1872). Each paratha costs 40-60 rupees and comes with pickles and chutney.
Local secret: The parathas here are shallow-fried, not deep-fried - lighter than you'd expect. End with a jalebi at the corner stall, dripping in syrup.
Evening
Chai at Natraj
Stop at Natraj Dahi Bhalle Wala (since 1940) for dahi bhalla, then sip masala chai at a roadside stall. Watch Old Delhi light up for the evening as call to prayer echoes from Jama Masjid.
3

New Delhi: India Gate & Lutyens

Imperial grandeur

Morning
Rashtrapati Bhavan
Visit Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Presidential palace and Lutyens' masterpiece - 340 rooms on 320 acres. Book the free online circuit tour to see the Mughal Gardens (February-March) and the Durbar Hall.
Book ahead: Reserve free tickets online at rashtrapatisachivalaya.gov.in at least 24 hours ahead. Bring passport for ID.
Afternoon
India Gate & Rajpath
Walk down Rajpath, the ceremonial boulevard, to India Gate, the 42-meter war memorial inscribed with 13,000 soldier names. Join locals for evening ice cream and boat rides on the adjoining canal.
Evening
Dinner at Pandara Road
Head to Pandara Road Market, Delhi's smartest food court. Try Gulati for butter chicken and naan or Veg Gulati for paneer tikka. Book ahead - lines are long on weekends.
4

Humayun's Tomb & Lodhi Gardens

Garden tombs of the Mughals

Morning
Humayun's Tomb
Visit Humayun's Tomb, the UNESCO garden-tomb built in 1570 and the direct inspiration for the Taj Mahal. The Persian-style charbagh gardens and white marble dome are stunning at 9am light. Don't miss the Isa Khan tomb next door.
Pro tip: Entry is 600 rupees for foreigners. Go early for cool air and few crowds - the gardens are 30 acres.
Afternoon
Lodhi Gardens
Walk to Lodhi Gardens, 90 acres of green lawns dotted with 15th-century Sayyid and Lodhi tombs. Join morning yogis, joggers, and parakeets. The Bara Gumbad and Sikander Lodi's tomb are the highlights.
Local secret: Lodhi Gardens is free and the best picnic spot in Delhi. Grab takeaway from Khan Market and eat among 500-year-old tombs.
Evening
Dinner at Khan Market
End at Khan Market, Delhi's chic shopping enclave. Try Khan Chacha for kathi rolls or Town Hall for modern Indian. Sip a chai at Café Turtle.
5

Qutub Minar, Lotus Temple & Akshardham

Towers, temples, and a water show

Morning
Qutub Minar
Visit Qutub Minar, the UNESCO 73-meter brick minaret begun in 1199 - the tallest in the world. Wander the Qutub complex with the Iron Pillar (rust-free for 1,600 years) and the unfinished Alai Minar.
Book ahead: Entry is 600 rupees for foreigners. Arrive at 7am opening to beat the heat and crowds.
Afternoon
Lotus Temple
Head to the Lotus Temple, the Bahá'í house of worship shaped like a 27-petaled marble lotus. Entry is free; sit in silence in the prayer hall. Then visit the nearby ISKCON temple for contrast.
Pro tip: The Lotus Temple closes Mondays. Photography is allowed outside but not inside the prayer hall.
Evening
Akshardham & Water Show
End at Akshardham, a colossal Hindu temple complex on the Yamuna River. The carved-stone mandir, the boat ride through Indian history, and the Sahaj Anand musical fountain water show at 7:45pm are unforgettable.
Security note: No phones, cameras, or bags allowed inside - lockers are free. Book the water show ticket (170 rupees) at entry.
6

Taj Mahal Sunrise Day Trip

Agra and the world's wonder

Morning
Train to Agra at Sunrise
Catch the Gatimaan Express from Hazrat Nizamuddin station at 8:10am (1,300 rupees, 100 minutes) to Agra. Or book a private car (5,000 rupees round trip) to leave at 5am for true sunrise at the Taj.
Book ahead: Reserve train tickets on IRCTC weeks ahead. Taj Mahal tickets (1,300 rupees for foreigners) are cheapest online - book a timed slot.
Afternoon
Agra Fort & Lunch
After the Taj, visit Agra Fort, the red-sandstone palace where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son - with a window view of the Taj. Lunch at Pinch of Spice for Mughlai thali.
Local secret: Skip the marble inlay factories your driver recommends - they're commission traps. Buy souvenirs at the Taj itself.
Evening
Return to Delhi
Catch the return Gatimaan at 5:50pm, back in Delhi by 7:30pm for dinner.
7

Dilli Haat & Farewell Feast

Crafts, bargaining, and final flavors

Morning
Dilli Haat Market
Spend the morning at Dilli Haat, an open-air craft market with stalls from every Indian state. Bargain for Pashmina shawls, Madhubani paintings, brass statues, and silver jewelry. Entry is 40 rupees.
Bargaining tip: Start at 40% of the asking price and meet around 60%. Walk away - sellers often call you back with a lower price.
Afternoon
State Food Stalls
Lunch at Dilli Haat's state food stalls - try momos from the Nagaland stall, dosa from Tamil Nadu, and chole bhature from Punjab. Each plate runs 150-250 rupees.
Local secret: The Kashmir stall's wazwan lamb and the Odisha stall's macchha besara are underrated - most tourists stick to dosa.
Evening
Farewell at Bukhara
End your trip at Bukhara, the legendary frontier-cuisine restaurant at the ITC Maurya (since 1977). Order the Dal Bukhara (black lentils simmered overnight) and sikandari raan. A splurge at 3,000 rupees per person, but iconic.
Souvenir tip: Bring home saffron, tea, Pashmina, spices from Khari Baoli, or a mini Taj Mahal replica. Pack fragile items in carry-on.

Practical Tips

Getting There

Fly into Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). The Airport Express Metro reaches New Delhi station in 20 minutes for 60 rupees.

Transportation

The Delhi Metro is clean, air-conditioned, and cheap (10-60 rupees). Use the women's car at the front. Uber and Ola cover the city; always confirm the license plate.

Visa Requirements

Most nationalities need an e-Visa (apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in, $25-80). Processing takes 4 days - apply before you fly.

Solo Travel Safety

Use the Metro women's car, avoid empty streets after dark, dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), and trust your instincts. Delhi is safe but stay alert.

What to Pack

Modest breathable clothes, a scarf for mosque visits, sealed water bottles, hand sanitizer, and toilet paper - not all public restrooms provide it.

Local Etiquette

Remove shoes at temples, use your right hand for eating and passing items, never point with your feet, and bargain with a smile - it's expected at markets.

The ASI combo ticket for 1,100 rupees saved us a fortune - covered Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, and Qutub Minar. Red Fort at 9am was magical before the heat. Karim's that night - mutton burra kebab and nihari with khameeri roti for 800 rupees for two. The Karim's 2 upstairs tip was genius, air-conditioned and same menu.

The cycle rickshaw through Chandni Chowk for 200 rupees was the best money I spent. We agreed the price first and wound through spice shops at Khari Baoli - cardamom and chili hit you in waves. Paranthe Wali Gali's banana paratha at Pandit Gaya Prasad was bizarre and delicious. The jalebi at the corner stall was syrup perfection.

As a solo female traveler, the women's Metro car tip was reassuring - clean, safe, and cheap at 40 rupees. Rashtrapati Bhavan free online tour was incredible; booked 24 hours ahead and brought my passport. India Gate after sunset with families picnicking was the real Delhi. Pandara Road's Gulati butter chicken lived up to the hype.

Humayun's Tomb at 9am was the Taj Mahal preview I didn't know I needed - charbagh gardens and white marble dome, almost empty. Lodhi Gardens being free and full of 500-year-old tombs with joggers and parakeets was a highlight. Grabbed takeaway from Khan Market and picnicked among Sayyid tombs. Qutub Minar's Iron Pillar hasn't rusted in 1,600 years - mind-blowing.

Akshardham's no-phones policy felt like a relief - lockers are free. The carved stone mandir is overwhelming in scale. The Sahaj Anand water show at 7:45pm for 170 rupees was a multi-sensory spectacle. Lotus Temple's silence in the prayer hall was a serene contrast. Two completely different spiritual experiences in one day.

The Taj Mahal day trip was the whole reason I came to India. We took the Gatimaan Express at 8:10am for 1,300 rupees - 100 minutes flat. Booked the Taj timed ticket online and walked straight in. Agra Fort's window where Shah Jahan watched the Taj was poignant. Skipped the marble factories as advised - good call, our driver pushed hard.

December was perfect - 70°F and no smog. Dilli Haat bargaining was a thrill; started at 40% for a Pashmina and met at 60%, walking away once got the seller chasing me. The Kashmir stall's wazwan lamb was the underrated pick. Bukhara's Dal Bukhara at 3,000 rupees was a splurge but those overnight-simmered black lentils were unreal.

The e-Visa on indianvisaonline.gov.in was $40 and took 3 days - applied a week ahead, no problem. Airport Express Metro for 60 rupees to New Delhi station was seamless. Jama Masjid minaret climb for 300 rupees gave us Old Delhi rooftop views at sunset. Karim's nihari with khameeri roti rivaled my grandmother's ragù.
