Santo Domingo Discovery
7-Day Journey Through the Oldest City in the Americas
Why Santo Domingo?
Santo Domingo stands as a remarkable testament to the beginning of European colonization in the Americas. Founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus, brother of Christopher Columbus, it became the first permanent European settlement in the New World. Today, this vibrant capital offers a fascinating blend of colonial heritage and modern Caribbean energy—a city where you can walk the same streets as conquistadors while enjoying world-class cuisine and nightlife.
The Zona Colonial, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a treasure trove of firsts: the first cathedral, the first hospital, the first university, and the first street lit by electricity in the Americas. Beyond history, Santo Domingo pulses with authentic Dominican life—salsa rhythms spill from rooftop bars, merengue plays in neighborhood colmados, and the scent of fresh-squeezed tropical juices fills the air. The city's Caribbean coastline offers beautiful beaches, while inland mountains provide dramatic scenery for day trips.

What Travelers Say
As a history buff, Santo Domingo was a pilgrimage. Walking where Columbus walked, seeing the first cathedral in the Americas—there's something profound about standing in those places. The colonial zone is incredibly well-preserved and the local guides bring it all to life.
This was my third Caribbean island and the most culturally rich. Santo Domingo has layers—colonial history, vibrant modern culture, incredible food. Los Tres Ojos caves were a highlight I didn't expect. The city has so much more than beaches.
I combined three days in Santo Domingo with a beach extension and it was perfect. The city has this authenticity that resort areas lack. The people are incredibly warm, the merengue music everywhere, the food—I'm planning to go back next year.
The Zona Colonial is gorgeous—cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, hidden plazas. I hired a guide for half a day and learned so much about Dominican history. The malecón at sunset is romantic. Highly recommend for couples.
Boca Chica beach was perfect—shallow, calm water great for swimming. The seafood right on the beach was incredibly fresh and cheap. This is the "real" Dominican Republic, not the resort bubble. Loved it.
