Alfama at sunrise, before the tram 28 crowds arrive. The narrow alleys, laundry hanging between buildings, the smell of fresh bread from padarias. Stopped at a hole-in-the-wall for a pastel de nata still warm from the oven, 1.20 euros, custard slightly burnt on top exactly how it should be. Lisbon stole my heart.

Porto's wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, tasting tawny port that's been aging for 20 years. Graham's has the best terrace view over the Douro River. Learned the difference between ruby, tawny, and vintage from a guy whose family has made wine for four generations. Left with three bottles I can't afford to open yet.

Sintra is a Disney castle come to life but go early. Pena Palace opens at 9:30am and by 11am the tour buses arrive. The colorful terraces and secret pathways are surreal. Quinta da Regaleira's Initiation Well, that spiral staircase down into the earth, gave me chills. Combined ticket for both was 20 euros, book online.

Algarve beaches in April are perfection. Praia da Marinha has those limestone arches and sea stacks that look like they were sculpted. Water was too cold to swim but I hiked the clifftop trail from Praia da Marinha to Benagil, about 6km of stunning views. Saw dolphins from the cliffs near Carvoeiro.

Fado in Mouraria, Lisbon's old Moorish quarter. Not the touristy restaurant stuff, we found a tiny taverna where locals sang after midnight, raw and emotional. The saudade, that Portuguese longing, makes sense when you hear it live. No photos allowed, just listen. Brought me to tears and I don't cry easily.

Azores Sao Miguel island is Europe's best-kept secret. Sete Cidades, these twin lakes in a volcanic crater, one blue and one green, viewed from Boca do Inferno viewpoint. The cozido stew cooked underground by volcanic steam in Furnas was weird and wonderful. No crowds, no chains, just pure green beauty.
Los Angeles, CA | February 2026
Douro Valley wine train from Porto to Pinhao, winding along the river through terraced vineyards. Had lunch at Quinta do Bomfim, their 2017 vintage port paired with roasted goat. The scenery is jaw-dropping, these steep hills covered in vines that have been cultivated for centuries. Book the scenic train on weekends.

LX Factory in Lisbon is what every hipster neighborhood wants to be. Street art, indie bookshops, rooftop bars with Tagus River views. Ate at A Cantina, industrial-chic with amazing petiscos, Portuguese small plates. The Ler Devagar bookstore with the flying bicycle sculpture is worth the trip alone. Sundays have a flea market.
