Getting There

Fly into Munich Airport (MUC). The S1 or S8 S-Bahn reaches Marienplatz in 40 minutes for 13 euros.

Transportation

Buy an MVV day ticket (Zone M-6, about 8 euros) for unlimited U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, and bus travel across the city.

Visa Requirements

EU citizens need no visa. U.S. and Canadian citizens can stay 90 days visa-free in the Schengen Area.

Oktoberfest Timing

Oktoberfest runs mid-September to early October. Book hotels 6 months ahead - prices triple during the festival. Tents fill by 10am on weekends.

What to Pack

Layers for changeable Alpine weather, comfortable walking shoes, and a reusable bottle - Munich tap water is excellent.

Local Etiquette

Say "Prost" with eye contact before drinking, return the 1-euro Pfand on your beer glass, and never jaywalk - locals will scold you.

The Hofbräuhaus tip about heading upstairs to the Schwemme was gold - we got a table right away while the ground floor was packed. Christmas markets in December were magical - the one at Marienplatz had the best Glühwein and Schupfnudeln. The Glockenspiel at 11am in the snow was straight out of a storybook. Augustiner-Keller was our favorite beer hall, way less touristy than Hofbräuhaus. The Pretzel culture here is real and I'm here for it.
