7-Day Journey Through the Heart of Mexico

★★★★★ 4.9/5 (2,134 reviews) 📍 Mexico City, Mexico ⏱️ 7 Days

Why Mexico City?

Mexico City is one of the world's most extraordinary capitals—a megalopolis of over 21 million people that somehow balances overwhelming scale with profound soul. Built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital that Hernán Cortés razed in 1521, modern CDMX sits atop layers of pre-Columbian history. The result is a city of infinite layers: ancient temples jutting through streets, colonial churches beside sleek skyscrapers, and one of the world's great art collections in a former palace of conquistadors.

Beyond history, Mexico City has emerged as one of the world's premier culinary destinations. Street tacos are elevated to high art, traditional markets overflow with ingredients you've never seen, and the city boasts more Michelin-starred restaurants than ever before. The neighborhoods—Roma, Condesa, Coyoacán, San Ángel—each have distinct personalities, linked by the elegant Metro and the infinitely drivable ring road, the Anillo Periférico. And then there's the art: Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul, Diego Rivera's murals in the Palacio Nacional, and a thriving contemporary art scene that puts CDMX firmly on the global cultural map.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival & Zócalo Exploration

Settle into the Heart of Mexico

🌅 Morning

Arrive at Mexico City International Airport ( Benito Juárez) and take the Metro or a taxi to your hotel. Mexico City's compact Centro Histórico puts most major attractions within walking distance. Start with the Zócalo, the main square—it's one of the largest public plazas in the world.

🍽️ Afternoon

Visit the Templo Mayor, the excavated Aztec temple that dominates the downtown area. Then walk to the Metropolitan Cathedral, built over centuries in varying styles. Have lunch at La Casa de los Tacos, a local favorite near the plaza serving authentic street tacos.

🌙 Evening

Walk along the beautiful Paseo de la Reforma at sunset, when the avenue's fountains and monuments are illuminated. The iconic Torre Latina skyscraper offers panoramic views. Have dinner in the Juárez neighborhood at Limosnero, a tiny restaurant with an incredible tasting menu.

Day 2

Temple of Sun & Anthropology Museum

Discover Ancient Civilizations

🌅 Morning

Visit the Templo Mayor and the adjacent Museum of the Templo Mayor to understand the Aztec civilization that once thrived here. Then take the Metro to the Basilica of Guadalupe, the most important religious site in the Americas, where the Virgin of Guadalupe is said to have appeared to Juan Diego in 1531.

🍽️ Afternoon

Spend the afternoon at the National Museum of Anthropology, one of the world's great museums. The Aztec Hall alone, featuring the massive Sun Stone (Calendario Azteca), is worth the visit. The museum's architecture, with its famous fountain by architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, is iconic.

🌙 Evening

Explore the Roma neighborhood, one of CDMX's most fashionable districts. The tree-lined streets are filled with boutiques, galleries, and excellent restaurants. Have dinner at Contramar, the iconic seafood restaurant that's been a local favorite since 1998.

💡 Pro Tip: Buy a tourist pass (Tarjeta de Turista) for unlimited Metro rides and discounts at museums. The Metro is efficient and cheap, but avoid rush hours (7-9 AM and 6-8 PM) unless you want to experience maximum crowds.
Day 3

Coyoacán & Frida Kahlo

Explore the Artistic South

🌅 Morning

Take the Metro to Coyoacán, a charming colonial neighborhood in the south. Visit Casa Azul (Blue House), the home of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, now a museum that captures the tumultuous life of Mexico's most famous artist couple. Book tickets in advance—they sell out fast.

🍽️ Afternoon

Explore the cobblestone streets of Coyoacán, visiting the Trotsky House where the exiled revolutionary lived and died. Have lunch at one of the many cafés on Plaza Hidalgo, watching the artists and musicians who gather there. The mercado (market) is excellent for crafts.

🌙 Evening

Continue to San Ángel, just a short walk away, and explore the famous Saturday art market (Bazar del Sábado). Have dinner at the San Ángel Inn, an elegant restaurant in a former hacienda that has hosted celebrities and politicians for decades.

Day 4

Teotihuacán Day Trip

Walk the Avenue of the Dead

🌅 Morning

Take a day trip (about 45 minutes by car or bus) to Teotihuacán, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Americas. The Avenue of the Dead stretches between the Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon, and climbing both is a must—though the steep steps are challenging in the heat.

🍽️ Afternoon

Visit the on-site museum to see artifacts recovered from the site, including the remarkable butterfly Glyphs. Have lunch at La Casa de los Abuelos, a restaurant specializing in traditional barbacoa (lamb cooked underground). The maguey cactus fields around the pyramids are photogenic.

🌙 Evening

Return to Mexico City and experience the Condesa neighborhood, known for its art deco architecture and trendy restaurants. Walk through the beautiful Parque México, a lovely urban park. Have dinner at Rosetta, an Italian-Mexican fusion restaurant in a beautiful colonial house.

💡 Pro Tip: Go to Teotihuacán early morning (arrive when it opens at 9 AM) to avoid the tour buses and intense midday sun. The climb is strenuous—wear good shoes and bring water.
Day 5

Street Food & Markets

Taste Your Way Through the City

🌅 Morning

Take a food tour of the Ciudadela market and surrounding street food stalls with a local guide. Learn to distinguish the complex flavors of different taco varieties—carne asada, al pastor, carnitas, and more. Mexico City has some of the world's best street food.

🍽️ Afternoon

Visit the massive Central de Abasto market, which supplies most of Mexico City's restaurants. The volume is staggering—vendors sell everything from exotic fruits to live animals. Consider booking an organized tour that includes tastings of local specialties like esquites (corn in a cup) and tlacoyos.

🌙 Evening

End the day with dinner at Pujol, perhaps Mexico City's most famous restaurant, where chef Enrique Olvera has revolutionized Mexican cuisine. Alternatively, for a more casual but equally excellent experience, try Quintonil in Polanco, anotherOlvera restaurant with a Michelin star.

Day 6

Murals & Museums

Explore World-Class Culture

🌅 Morning

Visit the Palacio Nacional to see Diego Rivera's magnificent murals depicting the entire history of Mexico, from the pre-Aztec era through the Mexican Revolution. Then walk to the Museo de Arte Popular to see folk art and crafts. The building itself, recently renovated, is stunning.

🍽️ Afternoon

Explore the Museo de Arte Moderno and the nearby Chapultepec Castle, the only royal castle in North America, perched on a hilltop in the middle of the city. The castle offers incredible views and an interesting look at Mexican imperial history.

🌙 Evening

Take a sunset walk through Polanco, Mexico City's most upscale neighborhood. The streets are lined with boutiques, galleries, and some of the city's best restaurants. Have a final dinner at the beautiful rooftop restaurant of the Four Seasons Hotel.

Day 7

Final Day & Departure

Last Discoveries and Fond Farewells

🌅 Morning

Spend your last morning exploring a neighborhood you haven't yet discovered. The Doctores neighborhood has emerged as a trendy area with great coffee shops and restaurants. Or revisit your favorite spot—Chapultepec Park is vast and worth more time.

🍽️ Afternoon

Have a final meal at a traditional market, perhaps the Mercado Roma in the Roma neighborhood, where you can sample dishes from different Mexican regions in one location. Pick up some Mexican chocolate, artisanal mezcal, or handcrafts to take home.
