Arrival in Kigali

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Full Day: Rise before dawn for your gorilla trekking adventure, the highlight of your Rwanda journey. After an early breakfast, head to park headquarters for a detailed briefing on gorilla behavior, safety protocols, and conservation efforts. You will be assigned to one of the twelve habituated gorilla families that call this park home.
Then, hike through bamboo forests and dense jungle alongside expert trackers and armed rangers. The trek can range from one to four hours depending on where your assigned gorilla family is located that day. The altitude, which can exceed 8,000 feet, makes the hike moderately challenging, but the reward is beyond measure.
When you find them, you will spend one magical hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Watch silverbacks protect their families, juveniles play in the trees, and mothers cradle their infants. The gorillas are remarkably tolerant of human presence, often coming within a few meters. It is an experience that leaves most visitors speechless and profoundly moved.
Evening: Return to your lodge for a well-deserved rest, a warm bath, and a celebratory dinner. Many lodges offer massage services to soothe tired muscles.
Lake Kivu Day Trip
Morning: Drive to Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Lakes, for a relaxing day by the water. The lake's shores are lined with charming towns and sandy beaches.
Afternoon: Take a boat ride to one of the lake's islands, swim in the clear, safe waters, or simply relax with a book at a lakeside cafe. Lake Kivu is one of the few places in Rwanda where you can enjoy a beach experience.
Evening: Return to Musanze for dinner and reflection on your journey.
Golden Monkey Trek & Departure

Best Time to Visit
The dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer the best conditions for gorilla trekking. Trails are less muddy, and the chances of clear views are higher. However, Rwanda's temperate climate makes it a year-round destination.
Gorilla Trekking Permits
Gorilla permits cost $1,500 per person and must be booked months in advance, especially during peak season. Each permit allows one hour with a habituated gorilla family. The revenue directly funds conservation efforts and local communities.

Getting Around
Private 4x4 vehicles with guides are the most comfortable way to travel in Rwanda. Roads are generally excellent by African standards. Domestic flights are available but rarely necessary given the country's compact size.
Packing Essentials
Bring sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing, long sleeves and pants for trekking, gardening gloves for grabbing vegetation, a good camera with extra batteries, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle. Altitude can make temperatures surprisingly cool.
Cultural Etiquette
