Daily Journey Inspiration

1

Ancient Town & Japanese Covered Bridge

Arrival and UNESCO immersion

Morning
Arrival & Check-In
Fly into Da Nang International Airport (30 minutes away) and transfer to your hotel in Hoi An's Old Town. Boutique properties like Anantara Hoi An or Lasenta offer riverside charm with colonial architecture.
Best location: Stay within walking distance of the Ancient Town for easy evening exploration.
Afternoon
Hoi An Ancient Town Walking Tour
Begin exploring the UNESCO-listed Ancient Town, where Chinese temples, Japanese merchant houses, and French colonial shophouses coexist in perfect harmony. Walk across the iconic 18th-century Japanese Covered Bridge, adorned with a monkey and dog statue guarding either end.
Entrance tickets: The 120,000 VND Ancient Town ticket includes entry to five heritage sites of your choice.
Evening
Thu Bon River Lantern Boat Ride
As darkness falls, the town transforms when hundreds of silk lanterns illuminate the streets. Take a traditional wooden boat ride on the Thu Bon River, releasing floating paper lanterns onto the water for good luck.
Price: Boat rides cost around 100,000-150,000 VND and last 15-20 minutes. Negotiate politely.
2

Tailoring, Banh Mi & Night Market

Custom fashion and street food

Morning
Tailoring District Fitting
Head to the famous tailoring district along Le Loi and Tran Phu streets. Reputable shops like Yaly Couture, Bebe Tailor, and A Dong Silk can produce custom suits starting around $100 USD, silk dresses from $40, and leather shoes from $30. Bring reference photos and allow 24-48 hours with 2-3 fittings.
Quality check: Examine stitching, lining, and buttonholes carefully during fittings. Don't be shy about requesting adjustments.
Afternoon
Lunch at Madam Khanh - The Banh Mi Queen
Queue up at Madam Khanh's tiny shop for what many call the best banh mi in Vietnam. The friendly owner, who speaks excellent English, offers several varieties including BBQ pork, chicken, and vegetarian. Each sandwich costs around 30,000 VND.
Insider order: Ask for "the mix" - her signature combination with all the meats and secret sauces.
Evening
Hoi An Night Market
Browse the Nguyen Hoang Night Market, stretching along the river with hundreds of stalls selling lanterns, leather goods, souvenirs, and street food. Try banh xeo (crispy turmeric pancakes) grilled fresh at the food stalls.
3

My Son Sanctuary & Champa Ruins

Ancient temples in the jungle

Morning
My Son Sanctuary Tour
Take a half-day tour to My Son Sanctuary, the former religious capital of the Champa Kingdom dating from the 4th to 14th centuries. These Hindu temple ruins, dedicated to Shiva, sit in a lush valley surrounded by jungle-covered mountains. Though heavily bombed during the Vietnam War, the remaining brick towers are hauntingly beautiful.
Best timing: Arrive at 7 AM opening to explore before tour buses arrive and while morning mist still shrouds the temples.
Afternoon
Return for Tailor Fitting
Return to Hoi An for your first tailoring fitting. Most garments need adjustments, so communicate clearly about fit preferences. While waiting, enjoy cao lau noodles at Morning Glory restaurant, a local institution run by celebrated chef Ms. Vy.
Must-try: Cao lau is Hoi An's signature noodle dish - thick rice noodles with pork, herbs, and croutons, only authentically made with water from a specific local well.
Evening
Riverside Dinner at Mango Mango
Enjoy modern Vietnamese cuisine with river views at Mango Mango, where creative cocktails and fresh spring rolls make for a memorable evening.
4

Cooking Class & Tra Que Village

Hands-on Vietnamese cuisine

Morning
Cooking Class at Red Bridge
Join a half-day cooking class at the Red Bridge Cooking School, one of Hoi An's most respected culinary programs. The experience begins with a market tour to select fresh ingredients, followed by a boat ride to the riverside cooking school. Learn to make rice paper, spring rolls, and traditional Vietnamese soups.
Book ahead: Classes fill up quickly, especially the morning sessions that include the market tour. Reserve online at least a week in advance.
Afternoon
Tra Que Vegetable Village
Cycle 3 kilometers to Tra Que Vegetable Village, where local farmers have grown organic herbs and vegetables for over 300 years using algae from a nearby lagoon as natural fertilizer. Participate in farming activities like watering, fertilizing, or harvesting.
Experience: Many farms offer foot massages with medicinal herbs after your farming shift - incredibly relaxing and only about 50,000 VND.
Evening
White Rose Dumplings at White Rose Restaurant
Try Hoi An's other signature dish, white rose dumplings (banh bao vac) - delicate shrimp-filled rice paper dumplings shaped like roses. The original White Rose Restaurant is the only place that makes them using the traditional family recipe.
5

Cham Islands Day Trip

Snorkeling and island escape

Morning
Speedboat to Cham Islands
Take a speedboat 15 kilometers offshore to the Cham Islands (Cu Lao Cham), a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The eight islands feature pristine beaches, coral reefs, and dense tropical forest. The boat ride takes about 30 minutes and can be bumpy.
Seasonal note: Cham Islands are only accessible from March through September due to monsoon conditions. Check weather before booking.
Afternoon
Snorkeling at Bai Xep Beach
Snorkel in the protected marine reserve around Bai Xep Beach, where visibility reaches 20 meters and coral gardens teem with tropical fish. Equipment is provided on most tours, and guides point out sea turtles and moray eels.
Responsible tourism: Use reef-safe sunscreen. Touching coral damages the fragile ecosystem.
Evening
Seafood Dinner at Bai Huong Village
Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch at Bai Huong fishing village on the main island before returning to Hoi An. Grilled squid, steamed clams, and fish hotpot are island specialties.
6

An Bang Beach & Bicycle Exploration

Coastal relaxation and countryside

Morning
An Bang Beach
Cycle 4 kilometers to An Bang Beach, Hoi An's most popular stretch of sand. Unlike the overcrowded Cua Dai Beach, An Bang maintains a relaxed vibe with beachfront bars, sun loungers, and surprisingly good seafood restaurants. The water is calm and swimmable most of the year.
Bike rental: Most hotels rent bicycles for 30,000-50,000 VND per day. The flat terrain makes cycling effortless.
Afternoon
Countryside Cycling Tour
Join a guided cycling tour through Hoi An's rural outskirts, passing water buffalo in rice paddies, duck farms, and traditional mat-weaving villages. Stop at a local family's home for tea and learn about rural Vietnamese life.
Sun protection: The tropical sun is intense. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses even on cloudy days.
Evening
Final Tailor Pickup & Lantern Shopping
Collect your finished tailoring and shop for silk lanterns to bring home. The lanterns fold flat for easy packing and make stunning souvenirs.
7

Final Morning & Farewell

Last bowls of noodles and departure

Morning
Breakfast at Morning Glory Original
Have a final breakfast at Morning Glory Original on Phan Chu Trinh Street. The com ga (chicken rice) and mi quang (turmeric noodles) are outstanding, and the bustling open kitchen lets you watch the cooks work their magic.
Best value: The set breakfast menu including coffee and juice costs around 120,000 VND - an incredible deal for the quality.
Afternoon
Last-Minute Exploration
Take one final stroll through the Ancient Town, crossing the Japanese Covered Bridge and browsing any shops you missed. Stop at Reaching Out Tea House, a beautiful quiet teahouse run by deaf staff where you communicate through notes and gestures.
Evening
Transfer to Da Nang
Transfer to Da Nang for your flight home, carrying custom-made clothes, silk lanterns, and memories of Vietnam's most enchanting town.

Getting There

Fly into Da Nang International Airport (DAD). Hoi An is a 30-minute taxi or Grab ride away, costing around 250,000-350,000 VND.

Transportation

The Ancient Town is entirely walkable. Rent bicycles for beach trips. Use Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber) for longer distances.

Visa Requirements

Most nationalities need an e-visa for Vietnam, obtainable online for $25 USD. Processing takes 3 business days.

Budget Tips

Street food meals cost $2-5. Happy hour cocktails at riverside bars run 4-7 PM. Bargain at the night market but not at restaurants.

What to Pack

Light, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle.

Local Etiquette

Dress modestly when visiting temples. Remove shoes before entering homes. A small bow and smile go a long way.

Hoi An is pure magic. The lantern boat ride on the Thu Bon River was the most romantic thing I've ever done. I got three custom dresses made for under $150 total at Yaly Couture. Madam Khanh's banh mi lives up to the hype - I went back three times!

The cooking class at Red Bridge was incredible. I still make their spring rolls at home using the recipe card they gave us. My Son Sanctuary at dawn was hauntingly beautiful - we had the ruins almost to ourselves. The tailoring was fast and surprisingly high quality.

Cham Islands snorkeling was unreal - we saw sea turtles and a moray eel! An Bang Beach was the perfect place to unwind after busy days of sightseeing. The full moon lantern festival made our last night unforgettable; the entire town goes dark except for lanterns and candles.

Tra Que Vegetable Village was a highlight. Getting my hands dirty planting herbs and then having a foot massage with those same herbs was so authentic. The bicycle ride through rice paddies was peaceful and beautiful. Hoi An is incredibly affordable for the quality you get.

I was skeptical about the tailoring but ended up with a perfectly fitted wool coat and two silk blouses. The Japanese Covered Bridge and old merchant houses felt like stepping back in time. Morning Glory's cao lau noodles were addictive - I ordered them three times in one week!

The Reaching Out Tea House was the most peaceful hour of my entire trip. Communicating through handwritten notes in a beautiful colonial building was deeply moving. Hoi An feels like a town that genuinely values its heritage while welcoming visitors warmly.
