Take the metro to Heysel Plateau to see the Atomium, the 102-meter steel structure built for the 1958 World's Fair. Its nine spheres represent an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Take the elevator to the top sphere for panoramic views. Adjacent Mini-Europe displays 350 miniature models of European landmarks.
Architecture note: The design by Andre Waterkeyn was originally meant to stand only 6 months but became Brussels' most recognizable landmark.

Bruges Day Trip

Medieval canals, belfry towers, and cobblestones

Take the 1-hour train from Brussels Midi to Bruges. This perfectly preserved medieval city feels like a fairy tale. Start with a canal cruise through the UNESCO-protected center. The guides point out hidden gardens and architectural details you would miss on foot.
Early start: Trains run every 30 minutes. Arrive by 9 AM to beat the tour bus crowds.

Take the 30-minute train to Ghent. Start at Gravensteen, the imposing Castle of the Counts built in 1180. Walk the battlements, explore the torture museum in the dungeon, and enjoy views over the city's medieval rooftops. The audio guide is narrated by a local comedian and is genuinely funny.
Pro tip: The castle opens at 10 AM. Be first in line to explore the rooms without crowds.

Take the 45-minute train to Antwerp. Marvel at Antwerp Central Station, often called the most beautiful railway station in the world with its marble halls and grand dome. Walk through the Diamond District where 84% of the world's rough diamonds pass through. Visit the DIVA museum for the story of Antwerp's diamond trade.
Architecture buff: The station's combination of stone, glass, and iron is breathtaking. Allow time to simply stand in the main hall and look up.

Rubens House & MAS Museum

Farewell at A La Mort Subite
End your Brussels week at A La Mort Subite, a historic art nouveau pub dating to 1928. Order a Lambic beer or Kriek cherry beer and soak in the atmosphere of wood-paneled walls and vintage mirrors. The name means "sudden death," a card game played here a century ago.

Getting There

Fly into Brussels Airport (BRU) with direct trains to the city center in 17 minutes. Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL) is budget-airline hub with a 1-hour shuttle bus.

Transportation

Brussels is very walkable. The metro and trams cover longer distances. Buy a MOBIB card or single tickets. Day trips to Bruges, Ghent, and Antwerp use frequent and affordable trains.

Language

Brussels is officially bilingual French and Dutch, but English is widely spoken. Street signs are in both languages. French is more commonly heard in the city center.

Budget Tips

Many museums are free on the first Sunday of each month. Eat frites from street stands for cheap meals. Beer is affordable compared to neighboring countries. Stock up on chocolate at supermarkets for better prices.

What to Pack

Comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones. An umbrella or rain jacket, as Brussels weather is unpredictable. A small daypack for chocolate purchases.

Best Time to Visit

April to October offers mild weather and outdoor terrace dining. August brings the flower carpet every two years. December has magical Christmas markets at Grand Place and Place Sainte-Catherine.

Grand Place at night literally made me gasp. I turned the corner from a narrow street and suddenly this enormous golden square opened up in front of me. The detail on those guildhalls is insane, every statue and carving is gilded. I sat on the steps for an hour just staring. Best square in Europe, no contest.

Cantillon Brewery changed my entire understanding of beer. This family-owned lambic brewery uses open cooling in the attic where wild yeasts from the Brussels air ferment the wort.
