Where Banksy was born, Brunel's engineering marvels stand, and creativity fills every corner.
Hi, I'm Jess. Born and raised in Bristol, I've been exploring this city's creative soul my whole life. This guide was last updated in May 2026.
Bristol Accent Note: The Bristol accent is quite distinctive - we say "boy" as "boy," "no" as "nar," and have a singing quality to our speech. Bristol is incredibly creative and alternative. We were one of the first UK cities to declare ourselves a "City of Science," and our music scene (trip-hop was born here) is legendary. We say "alright" as a greeting!

Bristol Airport (BRS) has flights across Europe. Trains from London take 90 minutes. Temple Meads station is near the harbour.
Bristol is very walkable. The harbor ferry is an excellent way to see the city. Cycling is popular - hire a bike to explore.
Banksy pieces are frequently painted over or removed. See them quickly! Alternative walking tours give better context than official tours.
Bristol is cheaper than London. Many top attractions like M Shed and the museum are free. Markets offer excellent cheap eats.
Comfortable walking shoes for the hilly terrain, layers for weather, and a camera for the incredible street art.
Bristol is alternative and creative. Say "alright mate?" as a greeting. We're proud of our city's independent spirit!

The Clifton Suspension Bridge is even more impressive than I expected. Standing in the middle of that span over the Avon Gorge, you can really appreciate Brunel's engineering genius. The views are stunning - we spent an hour just taking photos. The walk down to the viewpoint near Clifton Zoo gave us the classic shot.
Manchester, UK | March 2026
The Banksy street art tour was the highlight of my trip. Our guide was so knowledgeable about both the art and Bristol's history. Seeing "The Mild Mild West" in person and learning the story behind it was fascinating. Stokes Croft has incredible energy - it's like an open-air art gallery everywhere you look.
San Francisco, CA | February 2026
SS Great Britain was absolutely phenomenal - I'm an engineer and this ship is incredible. Seeing the original iron hull, the propeller, and learning about Brunel's vision was thrilling. The Being Brunel museum added so much context. We spent nearly four hours there and could have stayed longer.
Edinburgh, UK | January 2026
The M Shed museum was fascinating - I learned so much about Bristol's history as a major port. The harbor ferry was a perfect way to see the city from the water. The restored harbor area is beautiful, and the floating restaurants were perfect for lunch with a view.
Vancouver, Canada | December 2025
The day trip to Bath was perfect - it's only 15 minutes by train! The Roman Baths were absolutely incredible - walking around those ancient pools where Romans bathed 2,000 years ago gave me goosebumps. The Royal Crescent is so elegant. Bristol makes a great base for exploring the southwest.
Brisbane, Australia | November 2025
Southville's Brighton Beach mural is so cool - that colorful photo of beach huts is incredibly photogenic. The whole area has such a creative vibe. I loved exploring the independent shops along North Street too. Bristol has so much character - it's got the creativity of Berlin with a very British charm.
