Where beach culture meets bohemian vibes, and everyone's free to be themselves.
Hi, I'm Jamie. Born and raised in Brighton, I've seen this city become one of the coolest in Europe. This guide was last updated in May 2026.
Brighton Accent Note: Brighton has a distinctive south coast accent - we speak more Estuary English with influences from London. The locals are called "Brightonians" and are known for being open-minded, creative, and friendly. Brighton is often called "London by the Sea" - we're quirky, diverse, and proud of it!

Farewell to Brighton
Brighton is 60 minutes from London by train (several services from Victoria and London Bridge). Gatwick Airport is 30 minutes away.
Brighton is very walkable. The bus network is good. Cycling is popular - hire a bike to explore like a local.
Brighton's beach is pebbled, not sandy. Bring flip-flops or water shoes for comfort. The sea is cold - even in summer!
Brighton is more affordable than London but pricier than other seaside towns. Many attractions are free, and there are great budget eats.
Layers for changeable weather, comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, and a light jacket for evenings. Beach towels!
Brighton is incredibly liberal and welcoming to everyone. Be yourself! Don't be surprised by the colorful characters - they're part of Brighton's charm.

Brighton Pier brought back so many childhood memories! The arcade games, the donkey rides, the candy floss - it's everything I love about traditional British seaside holidays. The fish and chips from the Rock Restaurant while sitting on the pebbles watching the sunset was perfect.
San Francisco, CA | March 2026
The Royal Pavilion is absolutely breathtaking - the interior is like nothing I've ever seen. The Indo-Saracenic design with all that gold leaf and elaborate decoration - it's opulent beyond belief. The gardens were beautiful in spring too. Brighton exceeded my expectations.
London, UK | February 2026
The Lanes are amazing for vintage shopping - I spent three hours hunting through racks and found some incredible pieces. The backstreets off Trafalgar Street are goldmines for vintage clothing. The street art in North Laine is also fantastic - great photo opportunities everywhere.
Brisbane, Australia | January 2026
The Seven Sisters and Beachy Head were absolutely spectacular - those white cliffs are so dramatic against the blue sea. The walk along the cliff tops with views of the English Channel was unforgettable. The contrast between Brighton's vibrant city and this peaceful countryside was perfect.
Toronto, Canada | December 2025
Brighton's inclusivity was so refreshing. As a queer traveler, I felt completely safe and welcome everywhere. The LGBTQ+ scene is vibrant but not overwhelming. The nightlife was incredible - we went to a drag show at Revenge and it was absolutely hilarious. Brighton's energy is unmatched!
New York, NY | November 2025
I tried paddleboarding for the first time in Brighton and loved it! The water sports schools along the seafront are excellent - very patient instructors. Even though I fell in a bunch of times, the instructors made it fun. The sea was freezing but the experience was worth it!
