Where 2,000-year-old Roman baths meet stunning Georgian architecture and therapeutic spa waters.
Hi, I'm Catherine. I moved to Bath 12 years ago and fell so deeply in love with this city that I never left. This guide was last updated in May 2026.
Bath Accent Note: Bath has a more refined accent than much of England, reflecting its historical status as a resort for the wealthy. You'll hear clipped consonants and elegant phrasing. The local term for Bath residents is "Bathonians." We're known for being friendly but slightly more reserved than Northerners - that famous English reserve!

Farewell to Bath
Bath is 90 minutes from London by train. Direct services from Paddington run frequently. Bath Spa station is in the city center.
Bath is very compact and walkable. Most attractions are within 15 minutes' walk of each other.
Thermae Bath Spa is the only place to experience the thermal waters. Book well in advance, especially for weekend treatments.
Bath is expensive. The Roman Baths and Thermae Spa are costly - but there are excellent free walks and park visits. Many museums have free entry.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Pack smart casual clothing for nice dinners. Bring a swimsuit for the spa.
Bath is quite elegant and refined. Dress nicely for dinner - the locals appreciate effort. Say "how do you do" rather than "hi" to blend in!

The rooftop pool at Thermae Bath Spa was the highlight of my UK trip. Soaking in natural thermal waters while looking at the Georgian rooftops - absolutely magical, especially at sunset. I spent three hours there and could have stayed longer. The Roman Baths were also fascinating - walking where Romans walked 2,000 years ago!

As an architecture enthusiast, Bath was a dream come true. The Royal Crescent is even more beautiful in person - that perfect sweep of columns! No. 1 Royal Crescent gave me such insight into Georgian life. I spent two hours just walking the streets marveling at the buildings. This city is a masterclass in urban design.

I'm a huge Jane Austen fan and the Jane Austen Centre did not disappoint. The walking tour was excellent - our guide was so knowledgeable and brought her novels to life. Standing in the Assembly Rooms where scenes from Persuasion were set gave me goosebumps. Bath felt like stepping into one of her novels.

The day trip to Stonehenge and Salisbury was perfectly organized. Stonehenge in the early morning mist was ethereal - almost spiritual. Salisbury Cathedral is underrated - the cathedral itself is magnificent and seeing the Magna Carta was a genuine thrill. Bath is such a civilized base for exploring.

Pulteney Bridge is one of my favorite places in England - it's so unique to have shops built into a bridge! The view downstream with the cascade is incredibly pretty. I had a lovely coffee at one of the tiny cafes on the bridge. Alexandra Park at sunset gave me the most incredible views of the Georgian skyline.

Sally Lunn's Bath buns were incredible - I had three! The historic building is fascinating, and the tea room has such wonderful atmosphere. The Holburne Museum was a delightful surprise - beautiful paintings in a lovely setting. Bath is expensive but somehow worth every penny. It's the most elegant city in England.
